This whole major combat being over is trash. We started bombing Fellujah and two other northern cities in Iraq. But I thought major combat was over? Guess I was wrong.

We beat Saddam's army, including the Republican Guard, which is why Bush proclaimed "mission accomplished". Now, we are fighting against terrorist cells and religious factions who want to prevent the interim government from creating a democratic government, and keep a democratically elected government from taking power.

Ignoring the facts to play partisan politics with the truth isn't semantics, it's poorly attempted spin. When I see people making that claim I know they either have an agenda, or they are a moron.

Though as far as I know no formal surrender took place, so it's not like the Iraqis had much say in the mission accomplished.

Yes I know...But i consider bombing some major combat. Bush said Mission Accomplished" because all major combat operations would be over in Iraq. But that isn't the case.

and you're suprised?
i "remember thinking are you stupid?!" the first time i heard bush declare that they'd go into iraq and it would be over in no time, i think that was the first time i was sighing and dumbstruck over how stupid this man appeared to be.
then i thought it was a fluke or a careless statement. whatever

you forgot to mention that we are fighting iraqi citizens who want nothing more than the US to leave too.

the "mission accomplished" statement was a huge bush fuckup and he's been called on it repeatedly. don't try to defend it, it makes you look like a partisan fool.

i would say that when we can't even maintain control of the capital city of the country, there is no "mission accomplished", whatever bush meant when he said it. things are *not* going well, that's for sure. if one does not control the capital, let alone the major populated cities, one does not control the country. end of story.

The fact is that fighting was and is far from over and the mission is far from accomplished--defeating the Iraqi army was only the first step in outsing Saddam and democtatizing Iraq. But Bush needed to look like a victorious war president, hence the "misiion accomplished" hoop-la (now there's some poorly attempted spin for you), when the mission is only getting started. The US is going to be in Iraq for years.

Iraq is a mission that will never be accomplished by U.S. military force.
Period.
To believe otherwise is to ignore all reason, logic, facts, intelligence...

As long as the Marines need air support in Fallujah or anywhere else US Troops need air support , they should continue to drop bombs .

Okay so maybe Bush really thought the mission was accomplished because he condisered the mission to be defeating Saddam's army. Sure, that means he wasn't wrong to say that, but it also means he was horribly short-sighted.

I watched Frontline last night. They gave the US soldier death count. More people have died in this unwarented war than died in the World Trade Center disaster. WTF?? But their deaths are OK? Their mothers and fathers and wives and husbands and children miss them any less? And Iraq had nothing to DO with the WTC last I checked. As of the 8th of September 2004:

10,000 Iraqi’s have died

1002 US troops killed and 7,000 wounded

And the stain on America as a nation in the worlds eyes will take decades to erase. I have seen some of the video of US soldiers abusing Iraqi people, not just in the prison, but on the streets, destroying their cars and possessions, shoving them around, running their cars and homes over with tanks and laughing about it. If this is the kind of “Help” we offer I think they are better off without it. If abusing citizens of a country we invaded is being a hero, I hope that is a tag I never wear. I met some great people in the Navy, but I met even more total morons.

***Sticks up hand***

Actually, I am against the bombing.

Unless these bombs have morphed into " brilliant bombs" - I've got to believe they are doing a lot of civilian damage in a city setting.
