Plus we can't leave until we put somebody else into power who in a number of years down the road will turn on us and become another dictator for us to boot out.

The u.s. military says the insurrection will go on for 10 years,
(probably longer) and theyve just givin haliburton the boot.
They should with draw immediately and re-channel the funding
to iraqis rebuilding efforts, with iraqis having the final say
and contracting out of just the american pool if they choose. This will give them
much more of an incentive and they funds can be used as
an ultimatum for peace and democracy.......also it discourages
war profiteering and cronyism......

OK. Someone tell me why the U.S. can't just up and leave.

It creates a power vacuum and warlords take over.

Right. So now tell me what happens when the U.S. leaves.

WWII was over 50 years ago, yet we're still in Germany and Japan.

well, we're in germany and japan (and korea, etc.), but no one would claim we are occupying those countries. putting aside whether it was a good idea for him to do so, i think kerry was presenting his goal for ending the occupation as we know it today.

120,000 troops (including other NATO allies) is not a small presence either, though, in Germany. In the 1980, there were 350,000 troops there. That's 35 years after WWII ended.

Is this realistic? On the one hand 4 years seems like a long time, on the other hand the fighting doesn't seem like it will be ending anytime soon. I can't really imagine that he has a realistic plan to leave a stable Iraq in 4 years without any US troop support, and I know no one wants to see us bail on Iraq when it needs the most help.

Thoughts?

I think if he wins the terrorists will go underground and reappear when we leave
