Chain E-mails.
E-mails that tell you they'll reveal a joke after you send them to 10 people.
E-mails that say you'll win a free television if you forward an e-mail
E-mails that claim to be fundraising for some cancer child somewhere.

I get about 4 of these every day from people that are otherwise reasonably intelligent.

I thought this was about Bush's post-convention poll bounce wink

but yeah, chain emails suck, in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, I got lots of e-petitions from people who thought that forwarding emails with 400+ "signatures" would impress policy-makers.

eliminating an entire macronutrient from your diet will have no major effect on your body other than weight loss (a la Atkins)

eliminating the 13th floor from buildings because it is "bad luck".

Atkins, protein power, etc., revolve around the concept that carbohydrates are not a macronutrient (required in large amounts by the body). Also, none of these plans require complete elimination of carbohydrates. Also, fat provides the same energy that carbohydrates do. Alcohol is also caloric. I suppose it would be stupid to think that curbing alcohol as a staple of your diet might be ok?

Bottled water is fairly silly.

Even sillier are the two top selling bottled water brands in North America:

Dasani ( by Coca Cola)
Aquafina (by Pepsi).

Neither actually come from a spring. Both are made from municipal water sources.
Now that's a scam!

I admit to buying spring water, but I only pay $2.99 for six gallons. If your tap water tasted (and looked) like mine, you would, too. Even a filter doesn't help much.

the key word here would be "concept", since your brain and muscles need sugar from carbs to maintain their normal function. Atkins reduces your carb intake to levels where your body starts using the carbs stored in your liver and muscles. headaches, constipation, and weakness among others are all symptoms of carb deficiency. that's in addition to the obvious side effects of eating high-fat (ie. your heart) and high-protein (ie. your kidneys working overtime). fat may provide the same energy but you have to consider how your body breaks it down (deposits crap in your arteries). you can't convince me the "atkins breakfast" mcdonalds offers puke is a healthy alternative to eggs and toast with some o.j.

after all the diet fads that have come and gone (anyone remember the high carb diet?), i still can't believe the majority of people can't figure out that being healthy means balance, and not a quick fix.
