If you are prone to kidney stones, you may want to limit your caffeine intake.

Researchers caution that consuming more than two 8-oz cups of coffee typically leads to an increase in the production of calcium and other minerals in the kidneys.

[Study author Dr. Linda K.] Massey, who is based at Washington State University in Spokane, explained that a spike in urinary calcium increases the risk of stones because calcium is an important ingredient in kidney stones -- so the more there is, the more likely there will be stones.

Previous research has shown that people who do not tend to form kidney stones also excrete more calcium in their urine after consuming caffeine.

I have had kidney stones. And I used to drink nothing but cokes, tea, and coffee. My doctor told me that drinking those items caused me to not to be properly hydrated and contributed to my kidney stones. So, I have cut out a great deal of the caffeine out of my diet, and I have not regretted it.

There are very few things that have truely scared the hell out of me, and the very thought of getting a kidney stone is one of them.

I think I'm going to cut down my coffee intake.

Chezggek & Vanuslux- I think it's mostly if you're prone to kidney stones, which some people are, drinking caffeinated beverages will make them more likely to form.

Razorbladesonata- I hear ya, I have the same attitude, mostly, but note that kidney stones are extremely painful and the only way you can pass them is through your urine...which is VERY VERY painful. I've never had one and never want to have one. I'm not going to cut down on my caffeine (not that I drink much anyway), but if I develop a stone, no more caffeine for me!

I just thought that I'd make sure that you know you wouldn't be "content and happy" if you had stones!

Thanks for reading that part of the blurb. wink I was going to make that point, but you beat me to it.

I don't know if I'm prone to kidney stones or not. I've never had one, but that doesn't mean I don't have one forming right now. I don't WANT one, so I may cut back a bit. I drink a lot of diet soda.

I understood that point...I was more thinking along the lines of "Well fuck, if I haven't had one by now I probably don't have much to worry about." After all, I've almost never drank anything besides Coca-Cola or alcoholic beverages since I was two years old...which is a really frightening thing to consider.

I was 32 before I developed my first stone. Seems like I remember my doctor saying that most people don't start developing them 'till their 30's.

And for those who've never passed one, it's the type of pain where you just curl up in the fetal position and no matter how much you squirm or what position you try to lay down in the waves of pain just keep coming...and coming...and coming....

And it's not just the pain of passing the stone, there's also nausea and vomiting to go along.

The pain comes in "spasms" which lasts (for me at least) 20 to 45 min. These would occur in every 3 hours or so with intermittent nausea inbetween. I put up with this for 3 days before the stone finally scraped it's way out. Have you ever seen a piece of rock candy or the inside of a geode? Thats pretty much what the stone looks like when it comes out...only the crystals tend to be much smaller...and sharper.

Your description is similar to what I experience, but I had the benefit of hydromorphone to help me sleep and manage the pain. It has changed my entire opinion on narcotics.

Doctors have known this for a while..
I got a kidney stone in my senior year
of college..I was going to school full
time and working full time and caffeine
became my best friend..for anyone who has never had a kidney stone,DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO NOT GET ONE!! The pain is unbearable..
I thought someone was stabbing me in the kidney with a hot stilletto...then
when you pass it ,the stone is like the size of a few grains of sand..I learned
my lesson and now have cut back on
caffeine consumption.
