man, that huge expanse of white space at the bottom of the screen just kills the whole look. i know they need to fit everything in there, but still. and 256MB of RAM is standard, what the fuck? i guess this thing will appeal to casual users, but coupling a G5 with 256MB of RAM and NVIDIA's crappiest card..i don't know..

Any more than that as the standard configuration and they cut into the PowerMac market. This is designed for, like you say, casual users. It's more than enough to run any iLife app, any internet app, MS office, etc. etc.

I am interested to see how this computer does. Mac has always struck me as more computers for “high end” users, yet this seems an overpriced grab at the average consumer market. The price tag puts it up there with the best P4’s, yet I don’t think its performance is up to that level. The 256mb of Ram is a joke.

I am admittedly not a mac person though I first learned to program on the old Imacs and if there is one thing I remember from that class its what a really bad idea it is to have your computer inside your monitor. The old atage of all your eggs in one basket couldent be more accurate. When a pixel goes out on your screen, its no longer a question of a new monitor (or using a temporary monitor if there are more than one pixel) it’s a question of a new computer. The other issue is heat. We burned out an Imac ever few months from heat. Ever component in a computer case gets extremely hot and the last thing you really want is all of those components jammed in the smallest space possible.

I am also curious from the pics of its insides where you put expansion cards, or if it even has any upgradeability. I don’t know about others but I couldn’t live without my second cd rom drive, my second hard drive, and several of my PCI cards. I wonder where someone like me would jam all that stuff smile

The iMac model has always been about peripheral components, not upgradability. It's not a machine intended for someone who wants to tweak and upgrade their machine, it's intended for the average user who will never open a computer case in his or her life. And this sort of user user, at this point in time, does not need more than 256 megs of RAM for any application.

If you want another CD drive, there are any number of excellent external firewire CD drives. Want standard surround sound (rather than the provided optical)? Pick up a USB 2.0 Surround Sound card. Need more firewire ports for all these things? Don't worry about buying a new firewire PCI card, just grab a hub.

If you think, at any point in your life, you'll be running an application that needs more than 256mb of RAM, or need a specific PCI card, you're not in the iMac's target market.

Get a Powermac.

i'm the type of person that fully understands what the stats for such products mean, and yet i don't really consider myself a "geek". i have no desire to ever work in the tech business.
i've always been a mac fan, and when i went off to college 5 years ago or so, i bought myself a second generation imac for my dorm room.
i don't know what some people do to these machines, but i never once had a problem with mine and i'm one of those people that will let my computer in sleep mode for a large chunk of time.
i really think imacs are ideal for people with little space that use their computer for everyday tasks. i remember having 2 roomies that both had dells, and when you're living in a room the size of a closet with 2 other people, you don't really have room for large towers. they both had to squeeze their towers under their tiny desks, and thus suffered the expense of some leg room.
i'll also note, that both of them had to call dell support, and one even had to have new parts sent.
anyway, i had my imac and loved it dearly for 3.5 years until i got a g4 (mmm. after i moved out of the dorms of course.), and ended up selling my imac in perfect working order on ebay for like $300 or $400. hooray for rent money!

the point is, i think a lot of people overestimate what they need in a home computer. i think the amount of ram is ideal for someone like me, that just likes to fart around, maybe plays games every once in a while, and does a shitload of word processing.
