The alert is pinpointing Washington, specifically.

I live in Washington.

Hence, bullshit or no, I will be taking it seriously.

Yeah, NYC too. Man, I don't know about DC, but the NYC cops have been doing massive training exercise lately. I don't know how long they've been going on, but I walked out of my girlfriend's apartment the other morning, and there were literally hundreds of cops, cop cars, everywhere. One cop told me it was training.

Anyone know if this been going on for a while, or is it new?

Literally every time I've flown from San Francisco back to New York City the terror threat level is raised.

Maybe I need to not travel anymore.

They've raised it before, and nothing has happened, so I wouldnt be all to worried about this one. BUT. If their is credible intellegence out there that says theres a reason to be worried, I dont think you can just sit on your ass and do nothing. We did that once before.

Hmm. Actually, if you _read_ what's being said, they have specific information. Down to the 3 targeted buildings. No joke.

The government provided a wealth of detail that it had picked up in the past 36 hours, but a senior intelligence official described it only on condition of anonymity. The official described "excruciating detail" and meticulous planning "indicative of al-Qaida."

The official said the intelligence included security in and around these buildings; the flow of pedestrians; the best places for reconnaissance; how to make contact with employees who work in the buildings; the construction of the buildings; traffic patterns; locations of hospitals and police departments; and which days of the week present less security at these buildings.

To illustrate the level of detail obtained, the official cited these examples: midweek pedestrian traffic of 14 people per minute on each side of the street for a total of 28 people; that some explosives might not be hot enough to melt steel; and that the construction of some buildings might prevent them from falling down.

The official said he had not seen such extraordinary detail in his 24 years in intelligence work.

Specifically, the government named these buildings as potential targets:

_The Citicorp building and the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites) in New York City.

_The International Monetary Fund (news - web sites) and the World Bank (news - web sites) buildings in Washington.

_The Prudential building in Newark.

"The preferred means of attack would be car or truck bombs," Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said in a briefing with journalists. That would be a primary means of attack."

Yeah, I work in the IBM building, Madison and 57th...the police have been running a 'training action' for the past few months, 'Operation Hercules'. Every few days, there are hundreds of cops lining 57th...copcars filling the far left and right lanes of the street. Two weeks ago the street out front was shut down for a couple blocks because of a suspicious package.
The majority of New York seems relaxed and normal, but you can definitely feel the tension in Midtown and on the subways.

Probably because it's not deemed a NBC (Nuclear/Biological/Chemical) threat. It seems to be a vanilla car bomb scenario.

Stay safe!

Am I the only one who figures that even if this is true now that it's been published they'll just switch their targets to other buildings?

It is possible; on the other hand, they may just abort. Having spent so much time looking into building construction and avenues of attack, it would seem like they would want to get maximum effect per attack. Either that or they may have secondary targets, but the specificity of the information would lead me to believe that the government thinks they'll abort.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. It would seem to me that if law enforcement officials knew the details of a planned attack they could wait for the terrorists to show up and throw them all in jail rather than publishing the details of the plan and scaring them all away. However, I don't know much about preventing terrorism, so it's probably good that someone else is in charge.

if the terrorists have bomb, probably dont want to risk letting them get close enough to use it. Even if terrorists did not make it to their objective they could create heavy casualties in surrounding area.

One day Chicken Little was walking in the woods when -- KERPLUNK -- an acorn fell on her head
"Oh my goodness!" said Chicken Little. "The sky is falling! I must go and tell the king."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On her way to the king's palace, Chicken Little met Henny Penny. Henny Penny said that she was going into the woods to hunt for worms.
"Oh no, don't go!" said Chicken Little. "I was there and the sky fell on my head! Come with me to tell the king."

So Henny Penny joined Chicken Little and they went along and went along as fast as they could.

Soon they met Cocky Locky, who said, "I'm going to the woods to hunt for seeds."

"Oh no, don't go!" said Henny Penny. "The sky is falling there! Come with us to tell the king."

So Cocky Locky joined Henny Penny and Chicken Little, and they went along and went along as fast as they could.

Soon they met Goosey Poosey, who was planning to go to the woods to look for berries.

"Oh no, don't go!" said Cocky Locky. "The sky is falling there! Come with us to tell the king." So Goosey Poosey joined Cocky Locky, Henny Penny and Chicken Little, and they went along as fast as they could.

Then who should appear on the path but sly old Foxy Woxy.

"Where are you going, my fine feathered friends?" asked Foxy Woxy. He spoke in a polite manner, so as not to frighten them.

"The sky is falling!" cried Chicken Little. "We must tell the king."

"I know a shortcut to the palace," said Foxy woxy sweetly. "Come and follow me."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But wicked Foxy Woxy did not lead the others to the palace. He led them right up to the entrance of his foxhole. Once they were inside, Foxy Woxy was planning to gobble them up!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just as Chicken Little and the others were about to go into the fox's hole, they heard a strange sound and stopped.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was the king's hunting dogs, growling and howling.
How Foxy Woxy ran, across the meadows and through the forests, with the hounds close behind. He ran until he was far, far away and never dared to come back again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After that day, Chicken Little always carried an umbrella with her when she walked in the woods. The umbrella was a present from the king. And if -- KERPLUNK -- an acorn fell, Chicken Little didn't mind a bit. In fact, she didn't notice it at all.

The End

Actually, in a way, this is the kind of terrorist warning I want. I don't want these vague "We expect an attack somewhere on Earth within the next 50 years" warnings we've been getting. If you have an idea where -- and, more importantly, when -- an attack might happen, tell us. We need to know.

But, yeah, my first reaction when I heard this was "Damn, Kerry's convention bounce must have been bigger than they expected."
