Twenty Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders facing a hundred armed Iraqi insurgents fixed bayonets and charged, killing thirty-five while suffering only three minor wounds.

When the fighting ended bodies lay all over the highway — and more were floating in a nearby river. Nine rebels were captured.

An Army spokesman said: “This was an intense engagement.”

The last bayonet charge was by the Scots Guards and the Paras against Argentinian positions.

Fixing bayonets is a traditional method of breaking rabble. The psychological effect of facing cold steel in the hands of screaming Highlanders is well documented in the annals of war, and just the sort of thing that keeps the Scottish regiments from being disbanded.

And gentlemen in England now abed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon St. Crispin's day.

I think the members of Monty Python trained the Iraqi military. Things they do well include:

- Blowing up their children
- Blowing up themselves
- Stoning pregnant women
- Sawing the heads off tied-up prisoners
- Running away

Well there has never been a really effective Arab military, as aptly shown by Israels complete ownage of more than half the arab world 3 times.

Even the ones with modern equipment suck.

I was reading about the saudi Arabian military a while back. They have to hire foriegners to work on their military equipment(damn near everything in the country actually), because they think manual labor is unfit for arab males.

It's wierd.

You really think insurgents are the Iraqi mititary? Oh dear....

Anyway, I cant verify this story yet so I won't comment, except to say that the highland charges effectiveness entirely depends on the direction of the wind.. up the kilt or downwards... rather like the Spartans there is nothing more terrifying than a bunch of men who are so convinced they are going to rip you to shreds that they are happy to run into battle "tackle out". Oh, and snare drums and bagpipes make the sanest of us homcidal...

Yeah, they aren't the same scary Iraqi army that ran away as soon as the U.S. landed in their country.

I dunno, my hotel used to host a bunch of Saudis, Jordanians, and Egyptians coming through as guests of the United States military to learn how to maintain and operate the planes we've sold them at the local AFB.

painbearer,

Here is another source for the same story.

penates,

It is always appropriate to quote Henry V in general and the St. Crispan's Day speech in particular. The relevance in this case is that throughout the British Isles, crazed regimental types are really sorry that they were not present for that charge. For that matter, DI's in Parris Island and MCRD are probably morbidly depressed that they didn't get to participate in one of the really great feats of arms of the new century.

CNN reported it to but the sun tries to make it sound like the scotts charged madly into over a 100 rebels without support while in fact they were engaged in a firefight backed up by heavily armed armoured troopcarriers for quite a while untill the scottish decided to make a few charges during a lul in the battle.

those 35 dead weren't made by banjonet kills it was just the total death tally of the fight, a banjonet charge is mostly a psychological weapon meant to scare the crap out of them rather than actually poke someone to death.

Snottlebocket,

The pucker factor was great and the Highlanders charged. The real victory was in not giving in and not giving up.

If any of the Iraqi's had seen "Deliverance" a banjonet charge might have been even more terrifying, but then we'd be hearing more whinging about homoerotic horror stories. A bayonet charge is absolutely about meaning to kill with cold steel anybody who stands in your path, that is why it scares the crap out of people. Of course, it could have been worse, the Highlanders could have had a piper along!
