Yet the Feds have been giving Puerto Rico the option to either become a state or Secede for years. Decades even. Then again, they're not a state... ::Shrug::
Online petitions don't mean much. They carry zero legal weight, take no effort to sign and often have little to zero accountability or verification. The number of signers are less than 1% of the population of any given state, and there is no way to know how many of those people are actual people, let alone state residents.
TL,DR: some wingnuts are angry, as usual. So what?
I recall the same thing happening when Obama was elected the first time. More than anything it's a sad comment on the state of Texas's educational system, that it can produce people stupid enough to think Texas would survive a secession.

It's even more fucked up considering that in the middle school we take a Texas history course. In which we learn about the Alamo, the war with Mexico, becoming an independent nation, annexation and that we gave up the right to secede when we became a state. People tend to forget that last part.

so do you believe this to be nothing more then a temper tantrum being thrown by malcontents? and, nothing more will come from this?
The only way these are different from normal online petitions is that they get reviewed by White House staff, and the staff has said they'll respond officially to any petition with over 25,000 signatures. That said, they have no obligation to respond, and even if they did, an official response can include nothing more than an acknowledgement of the petition's existence.
Switch the word "Trending" with "being hyped up by the media." Petitions to secede occur every election, include mid term elections. We never hear about it because its never deemed news worthy. Why is it being deemed news worthy this year? Because so many people are worried how "Divided" the country is, so the media is giving us news the re-affirms our pre-existing concepts.

Well not quite..
Since they're not a state, secession has never been the question. Or at least I've never heard the term used in the context of a territory that isn't a state.
The option they've been given is to petition for statehood (which Congress would need to approve for them to get it) or for complete independence (again, Corgress would have to approve). Or the third choice, which is what they have typically opted for - leaving things as they are.

Well no, actually.

Except that, a week ago, Puerto Ricans voted in favor of statehood.
Well, except Texas. Also isn't Colorado, Oregon, New York & New Jersey on that petition list (which happen to be doner states that also voted for Obama)? Something tells me its not just about Obama getting reelected.

Here's a screenshot of the petition for Nebraska. What do you notice?
That the image is very small? OK, if I strain my eyes hard enough, it was created by some two initial name character from North Dakota, so anyone can create the petition for any state, and anyone can sign the petition from any state...
