"Backpackers and hostel owners could hold the key to identifying a young man, possibly an international traveller, who was hit by a train and killed in Melbourne's east last month.
More than three weeks after the man, believed to be in his early 20s, died near East Camberwell railway station, police are no closer to establishing his identity and no one has come forward to report him missing.
Senior Constable Leah Bound said the man was believed to have stepped out of an alcove near the railway station at 11am on September 14 into the path of an oncoming train and was killed. Police say his death is not suspicious.
Despite extensive searches, police have been unable to match his description with any missing persons cases in Victoria.

The man carried no identification in his wallet, which was empty except for an unregistered myki card that indicated he had travelled along the Williamstown and Belgrave lines in the two days before his death.
He was wearing a pair of jeans branded "Crocker", which are believed to be from Sweden."
If you know any backpackers in the region or know people who do...perhaps share this and help solve a mystery? I know we have quite a few Europe-people awswell as Aussie here and it's not even certain he is from Europe, the jeans might have been bought second hand or given to him.
There is a good probability that his family has now been found.
However, we need to respect that an "official identification" needs to take place, but any announcement needs to come through official channels - either from his family, or from the Victorian Police media centre.
We are unsure how long this formal identification process will take.
We are aware that news like this is a tremendous shock for any family, and we extend our sympathies to each member of this young man's family, and also to all of his friends. If and when they feel comfortable revealing information about their beloved son and brother, we would be privileged to get to know him through his family's eyes.
We are very grateful for everyone's help, the help of each one of you has been appreciated and has been invaluable in the search, and without your help we may never have found his family. We are truly grateful to each of you. We will release information as soon as we can, and thank you for your patience in this process. You've all been wonderful.
