What the ffffuck?

Answering a question about whether or not he thought abortion should be legal in the case of rape, [US Representative for Missouri's 2nd congressional district Todd] Akin explained his opposition by citing unnamed medical mechanisms he said prevented pregnancy.

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," Akin said of rape-induced pregnancy in an interview with KTVI. A clip of the interview was posted online by the liberal super PAC American Bridge.

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin continued. He did not provide an explanation for what constituted "legitimate rape."

Oh come on, admit it. Your ovaries are totally smart enough to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

No, no, no ... it's your ovaries, they can tell the difference between wanted and unwanted sperm, and "shut that whole thing down". Todd Akin heard it from doctors!

And this wasn't him misspeaking, as Akin would like you to believe, he has been on the mission to redefine rape for awhile - remember the bill he co-sponsored with Paul Ryan from last year - a.k.a. HR 3?

I am honestly asking. Is this about one guy who is crazy or what happens when you systematically dismantle sex education?

Not some lone wingnut

The article gives many examples of physicians, politicians, and a man who now sits on the federal bench, who have said the same thing. Comments on various articles on the subject reveal that people hear this in Sunday school, as well.

From the article:

Efforts to outlaw abortion and legislatively narrow the definition of rape to only the most violent assaults go hand in hand, as abortion opponents believe rape exceptions to abortion bans will be exploited by women to obtain abortions in an environment in which it is otherwise outlawed. Rape, therefore, needs to be defined differently -- to be defined more narrowly and to be defined, most critically, as something that does not result in pregnancy.

It's when a virgin is raped. Or a married woman.

So here is Akin's "apology:"

“In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview, and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year,” Akin said in a statement. “I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue. But I believe deeply in the protection of all life, and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action.”

I know we're way past getting upset about a non-apology apology, but doesn't it worry anyone he didn't say "I understand how biology works. I misspoke?"

Man, who taught that guy how to spell?

Akin continues to get hammered by his own party.

Also, if you're curious and/or masochistic, this is not how we science. Or even how we sicnece. One of many gems:

Now factor in the fact that it takes 5-10 months for the average couple to achieve a pregnancy. Use the smaller figure of 5 months to be conservative and divide the avove figures by 5.

I know the law guarantees no religious test for office, but I wonder if there should be a science test for that committee. surreal

On the other hand, it's awesome when politicians make such gaffes. It lets us all know that they are idiots. Just think, he may have been flying under the radar before this, and few outside Missouri were any the wiser. wink

My birth mother was raped by my biological father. I am living proof rape results in pregnancy.

"From the: Superior Court of California
County of Santa Clara

Circumstance of Placement: your adoption was arranged by your birth mothers doctor. Your birth mother did not met your adoptive parents. You were placed in your adoptive family's home on November 20, 19..

Your birth mother was very reluctant to provide any information to the social worker regarding herself or her family. She used a fictitious last name for herself on your original birth certificate. However, she eventually provided her real name to the social worker, prior to signing adoption consent forms.

According to the case file, your birth mother reported she was raped. . ...."

This is pretty much the extent of the adoption information the State of California allowed me to obtain. I often think I would have preferred they not release this info.

If Akin's comments make you as angry as they ought to, you might want to contribute to his opponent's campaign.

I grew up in Kansas City and the MO side is currently in a space race with the KS side to the heights of theocratic wing-nuttery. Akin has been leading comfortably in the race and unfortunately, his most recent idiocy alone is not likely to drastically reshape the race; if Claire McCaskill wins it'll be a close finish, so if you don't want to see Todd Akin writing and voting on national legislation, consider donating.

Mike Huckabee says "What about all the good things that come from rape?"

The former Arkansas governor and onetime GOP presidential contender suggested a couple of cases in which he suggested that rapes, though “horrible tragedies,” had produced admirable human beings.

“Ethel Waters, for example, was the result of a forcible rape,” Huckabee said of the late American gospel singer. One-time presidential candidate Huckabee added: “I used to work for James Robison back in the 1970s, he leads a large Christian organization. He, himself, was the result of a forcible rape. And so I know it happens, and yet even from those horrible, horrible tragedies of rape, which are inexcusable and indefensible, life has come and sometimes, you know, those people are able to do extraordinary things.”
