CNN reports that Israel killed the leader of the Arab terrorist group Hamas:

Hamas founder and spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was killed in an airstrike by Israeli forces Monday morning as he was leaving a mosque.

Thousands of angry Palestinians had gathered around Yassin minutes after the attack. Hamas gunmen fired weapons into the air, promising revenge against Israel.

Yassin founded Hamas in 1987, during the Palestinian intifada. Hamas is an Islamic fundamentalist organization whose military wing, Izzedine al Qassam, has carried out attacks on Israeli civilian and military targets.

Last week, twin suicide bombings jointly claimed by Hamas and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades killed 10 people in the Israeli port city of Ashdod.

Israel says the operations are meant to target terrorists preparing to take part in attacks on Israelis.

I know Israel sees its war against terror as a mirror of ours. But this may turn out to be a big mistake. The sheikh was not Osama. He was probably not doing much in the way of planning, funding, or carrying out attacks. But this will certainly fuel the fires of out-of-work, frustrated young Arabs throughout the territories. Expect more attacks on Israel, not less.

Death regardless of the causes is always some thing to be sad over.

Politics, religion, and differing philosophies just make it easier for people to kill one another unfortunately.

isn't a airstrike lacking a bit of subtlety to be called assasination?

Call me a heretic, but I think Israel has shown a lot of restraint. If we had people in the United States setting off suicide bombs every week or two, we would have killed everyone involved in the group, burned their houses to the ground and pissed on the ashes.

Man it is scary. THe leaders of Hamas are saying that the Israelis have opened the gates of hell. Plus they said that there going to cut Ariel Sharons head off. My feeling is that the Israelis were right in doing this but they their going to reap the whirlwinds of their actions.

Without a doubt, you would have. And in response to what sean said, about how this won't affect the planning, execution, and funding of these attacks... I don't think that's the intent, though it might in fact. Undoubtedly, there will be more young Palestinians willing to sacrifice their lives now. Such is the nature of this reactionary fued. But allowing cowardly civilian bombing, in the hope that they will cease of their own accord, is likely more naive. The PLO continues to incite violence against Jews, promote the armed struggle to "liberate all of Palestine," and indoctrinate Palestinian children into a culture of hatred where death is the ultimate prize. What would you have the Israelis do instead of retaliate? Every effort towards a peace treaty has simply cost them land and given Arafat a stronger foothold. These are not rational people, recent events can illustrate that. They would use children as bombs and seem to view attempts to reach a peacefull coexistance as signs of weakness. We should be thankful that, at least now, Israel is gunning for the leaders of these jihad movements and not bulldozing settlements. tongue

Tragically, Islamic types who like to blow people up are given to dramatic overstatement. Anyone remember the Saddam's now infamous "mother of battles" speech? With ten cents, the text of that speech bought you a small Diet Coke, and little else.

Hamas is always threatening to kill all of the Israelis in their homes. Maybe they are really pissed off. I wouldn't be surprised if they were. But I can see the IDF leadership shrugging, and saying, "What will you do now? Start blowing people up in the streets? And that will be different from what you do now ... how exactly?"

We are talking about a man who has personally ordered the murder of hundreds if not thousands of people, both Palestinian and Israeli.

Edit for clarification: Hamas has publically lynched hundreds of suspected Palestinian "collaborators".

The bombing needs to stop on both sides. Israel and the Palestinians need to look at this realistically. They’re neighbors, that's are not going to change. When the Palestinians blow something up, Israel is going to bring the hammer down. When Israel brings the hammer down, the Palestinians are going to blow something up.

Bill Clinton made huge strides in working on a peace accord. The problem was, there are leaders on both sides of this mess who don’t want peace. I don’t think there will ever be true peace in the Middle East.

It also doesn’t help the region that President FuckNut wants to show everyone how big his dick is by swinging it all over Iraq.

I have heard that the Hamas was relativly a good movement. Of course, they are extremist radicals, but they builded schools and gaved money to alot of organisation to help palestinians rebuilding their houses and stuff.

My question is... does it really change something to laser target a man in a wheel chair ? Will the violence stop ? no. Israel just made another mistake....

Hamas is already genocidal. Read the charter. Their goal is to conquer Israel and turn it into a Taliban-style police state.

It's hard to rile them up any more than they're already riled up. There's a point where an enemy can no longer say "don't piss me off, man." Hamas crossed that point long ago. They can't get any more extreme than they already are.

Its pretty hard to get more extreme than blowing yourself up, but more extreme isn't necessary to be more powerful. The fact is that martyrs raise money and recruits. Yassin was an evil fuck, but he was also and evil fuck who did more for the day to day life in the territories than Israel, the PLO, the PA and Jordan combined. The public face of Hammas in the territories are the schools and the hospitals. Putting a rocket through the guy that built them, no matter how many people he killed isn't going to cripple the organization, and it isn't going to scare the Palestinians into stopping. Its going to rationalize the violence in the eyes of the people that fund it and the people who commit it.
