I'm wondering about this as i work for the company and have really only heard their side of it. Seems like from what i've read they do some pretty good things (profit sharing, benefits, volunteer work, etc,). But I'm wondering why people have such a passionate hatred of the company. Please enlighten me.

I don't like Starbucks because most independent coffee shops make much better coffee, play better music, have a better ambience, and aren't corporations. I think the general hatred of them comes from them being on like every street corner, being a symbol of the corporatization of America, and from the video footage of the WTO demonstrations in Seattle in what was it, 96 or something? A Starbucks in Seattle was vandalized and that was about when hatred of the company seemed to really galvanize. I could be wrong about that though.

For me it's nothing to do with the WTO. I drink Starbucks if I have to.. but the coffee tastes horrible. There is much better coffee to be found at other shops. Starbucks sees the other shops as competition and tries to put them out of business. I guess that's what I don't like--they're limiting my choices because of their ham-fisted greed.

I've never seen a Starbucks in my entire life.
But, I assure you I would dislike it because coffee is nasty. puke

If one more person comes into my coffee shop of employment and says "I'll have a tall frappucino" I will rip out their intestines and staple them to their forehead.

I hate: A.) Their size names are retarded, B.) Coffees taste like what the sludge scraped out of a dead goats bladder would taste like, C.) Their prices make me laugh and cry at the same time, D.) What Thistle said and E.) I just plain hate them biggrin Wheeeeeeeee!

I just don't like the unholy proliferation, exorbitant prices, and sub-par coffee. That's all...

From Astor Place you can stand in one spot and see 5 (count 'em FIVE) distinct starbucks stores.

Interesting that you say that, because in both my hometown (which is small and hickish) and my current town (which is a university town), there is a Starbucks as well as several other independent coffee places, and both seem to coexist peacefully. I'm sure it's not like that everywhere, but it's nice that the indie places are able to thrive despite corporate presence here.

the main problem i have with them is that they go into established neighborhoods and open shop where other coffee shops have served their communities quite happily for years. then the other shops close down, and only starbucks remains.

i guess that's capitalism for you, and i shouldn't be surprised that people want the convenience of an established brand. but there's something sad to me about watching cities become completely homogeneous. unlike web businesses, physical real estate is scarce, so a loss of business to starbucks in a city neighborhood can completely change the character of how people live.

and while it's true that starbucks creates jobs, those same jobs would be created by a locally owned coffee shop, and all the profits would go to local small business owners.

When I worked there I used to dream about being at work nearly every night. I'm glad I don't work there any more. However, I don't think they're all bad. While it's true that it might be nice for the jobs they create to be created by a locally owned coffee shop how many of those small businesses offer their employees health insurance even if they're just part-time employees? How many local coffee shops offer profit sharing and 401(k) plans? Very few, I think.

that may be true, but i still would rather have a country of entrepreneurs and cities that you can tell apart, than a country with a handful of chains and 401(k)s for all. but it's hard to measure such benefits.

I think the most irritating thing about Starbucks is that they always stick them right across the street from a good coffee shop.

they support coffee bean suppliers that pay sub standard wages in countries with few or no labour standards. often time the workers are exposed to toxic chemicals without proper training or protection.

they recently introduced "fair trade" coffee, that they sell only one day a month. i think this says alot about their regular coffees.

It's a tough call. I hate talking to telemarketers, but I know they're just regular people trying to earn a living. I wish companies wouldn't use such campaigns, but I find it hard to fault the employees for participating in them.

the problem is that you just described the coffee industry in general. mom and pop shops rarely carry the fair trade stuff. maybe if starbucks led the way and drove the market for fair trade beans, the price might drop and everyone would have greater access.

heh. i wouldn't feel too guilty if i were you. i spent a solid year as a telemarketer when i was in college. telemarketers are, for the most part, either college students or sleaze bags who live to sell unwanted crap to complete strangers. anyone who has any shred of decency either quits after a few weeks or, if they're like me, sticks around for the humor value. turnover is high. no one who i met was doing it to feed their kids. smile
