Just to throw in a short story . When I was a child my parents took us to AC and one of the things I saw that day was the diving horse act . And my memory of that was that the horse ran up the ramp & dove off the board , no dropping it into the water . There was no pause in it's approach to the end of the " board " , it basically ran right off the thing .
The only other thing I remember about that trip was going in the diving bell off of Steel Pier , which was a rip off as all you could see out of the thing was brown water !

]I did work experience at a zoo, and the man who ran the seal show was a DICK. If the seals didn't perform to his standard, they would be kept in isolation for a day. So they learned to just do what they were told or they'd be punished- likely the same deal with the horses. They knew what was coming, but maybe the alternative was worse.
