The AP reports the lastest front in the war against smoking.

LOS ANGELES — If Nicolas Cage lights a cigarette in a movie, Hollywood's ratings board should respond as if he used a profanity, according to authors of a new study that criticizes glamorous images of smoking in movies rated for children under 17.

…

"No one is saying there should never be any smoking in the movies," Glantz, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, said Tuesday at a press conference at Hollywood High School. "What we're simply asking for is that smoking be treated by Hollywood as seriously as it treats offensive language."

Some people think smoking is offensive, obviously. But is it really comparable to profanity?

What would the authors of this study rather have me do? Like up a smoke on a street corner? Or say fuck you to their kids?

Since R-rated films typically earn less money because they are not open to most teenagers, Glantz said he hoped such a policy would discourage filmmakers from depicting unnecessary smoking, such as the nicotine-addicted worm aliens in “Men in Black.”

This is just bullying and control freakery, a way to impose an agenda on artists by threatening to cost them millions of dollars if they don’t comply.

Why stop with smoking? If we’re going to protect The Children from seeing bad adult habits on camera, we might as well restrict the number of Twinkies, french fries, and Froot Loops an actor or actress can eat in a movie.

Kicking smokers out of every bar in California ought to be enough micro-management for now.

I agree that smoking in movies is definitley part of the cool factor that seems to draw many kids into smoking, but honestly, when will this type of thing end? Various agencies already control who we can marry, when we can have abortions, what our kids learn in science class, and how much sex we can see on tv. Is this really necessary?

Absolutely ridiculous.

hey, you forgot to mention the smoking ban in New York as well. This is a national trend, not just a California issue.

btw, anyone see Demolition Man? The dystopic action movie from the early 90's in which smoking, cursing, sex, unhealthy food, and any form of physical contact is illegal? One thing they mention in the movie is that Arnold Schwartzeneger becomes president in the early 21st century. Creepy eh?

Now, I'm all for throwing the MPAA out on it's ass, but truthfully, if we're ranking things on a scale of badness, I'd much rather have kids swearing than smoking.
Their agenda is stupid, but their comparison is sound - showing swearing IS less harmful than showing smoking (and by "less" I mean "not harmful in any way"), and it is restricted more harshly.

In this day of age, by the time kids become the age of older adults, cancer of any form should easily be eradicated.

They should just tell kids the truth: "Smoking WILL make you look cool. It will also most likely lead to a premature, slow, painful death. If that's an acceptable trade off to you, then smoke up, Johnny."

I don't understand why thinning the herd of the weak and gullible is considered a bad thing these days.

Also, fuck the MPAA, fuck it up it's stupid ass.

I don't know that I agree with the idea, but I don't think I would have smoked if my dad hadn't. I looked up to my dad and thought everything he did was cool, so I can see how some kids might try smoking because they see their favorite actors/movie characters doing it.

yeah but you can counter that image with information. for example, kids see their favorite movie characters gunning down extras with uzis, but just about everyone (with maybe a handful of exceptions) knows that that's wrong.

Ahnuld couldn't become Pres. no matter what since he's Austrian...

Cigarette Paranoia is crazy though .. I do think you should be able to get a cigarette/smoking license for patrons that is clearly stated when you walk into an establishment.

I got that idea from at editorial from Elaine of Elaine's and thought it was a good one.

The bright side is, the less people I see smoking, the less I'm going to think about smoking - because, let's face it, I see a cigarette - even in 2D - and I crave one... or a pack... but since I can't smoke in public and it's too freakin' cold to smoke outside, I'll be less miserable... right? RIGHT?!

The same thing goes with any cause that gets half a footing in legislation. They keep pushing it as far as they can. I am a ex-smoker, but can't stand it when people try to think for me.

I don't smoke anymore(for quite a long time now, actually) but when I see things like this it almost makes me want to start again. Stupid puritanical officials...if I want to pollute my body just leave me alone! If they were truly worried about smoking they'd do something that might actually discourage kids from smoking...telling them it's something that's only allowed for adults tends to make most kids want to try it even more. Tagging something as "R" rated or with a "Parental Advisory" just draws kids attention to it faster.

It is interesting that we can't now smoke in bars in a lot of places. Would've fit their smoking-evil paradigm if smoking had stayed in an already restricted environment, which no child should ever see (obviously).

But now we'll all be smoking on street corners at 2am, and any kid could just wander up and think it's right.

Disgusting.
