Don't have time to do much more than throw out a quick link right now. The gist is that someone on the Penn State football staff witnessed an assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, fucking a little boy in the shower room in 2002, and informed Paterno. Paterno did the bare minimum, informing the athletics director. No charges were brought.

I'm a little ashamed of my state right now. After the announcement firing Paterno, Penn State rioted, flipping over a news van. I mean, jesus christ.

There has also been a discussion about this going on in the College Football Group.

On one hand, Joe wasnt the sick bastard molesting kids, but on the other it doesnt sound like anyone involved(including joe) did anything but try to deal with the situation as quietly as possible, because everyone knows, college football is far more important than child molesting happening on campus. whatever

Having grown up in a football town it always amazes me the lengths people will go to, or rationalize simply so the football season wont be ruined.

its called priorities, somewhere along the line poeple like that have obviously learned the wrong order of things.

What bugs me about the reporting of this story, from the media stories that I have read anyway, is that there is more of a focus on Paterno getting fired than there is on those poor 8 victims (and lets face it, it's only 8 because those are the 8 that have come forward; there's undoubtedly more).

Why would you want the poor victims to be reported on? What's the media supposed to say about them? It's important that there be ongoing discussion of the correct way for individuals and institutions to deal with abuse on the part of their employees.

I took that as what he meant, I wouldnt want the victims outed, but there certainly needs to be more attention paid to the fact this went on under all these people, got mishandled poorly by the same people when they found out(if they didnt suspect or know already) and the fact that the biggest upset of all to come out of this isnt that the molestations happened on a collge campus in the first place but that a college coach lost his job over it.

again, priorities.

I believe that what he means is best summed up by the Onion Sports headline: "Media asks sexual assault victims what this means for Paterno's legacy." The focus is on the football, not the fact that a lot of people were covering up (intentionally or not) child sex abuse.

I don't want (and I'm pretty sure that Canadian_Coat doesn't want) the victims thrust into the spotlight, but the media should be focusing on the crimes, not "boo fucking hoo PSU football legacy/near future of program." I also very much want the media to focus on the allegations that Sandusky, beyond just abusing these boys, purportedly was pimping them out to rich donors to PSU football. If there's a shred of truth to that, then that is where media focus should be.

This story is going to get weird.

Former Penn State Coach Prosecutor Center of Missing Man Mystery

The prosecutor who decided to not pursue sex abuse charges against former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky more than a decade ago, despite an alleged confession, is at the center of a missing persons mystery that has enraptured middle Pennsylvania for years.

and

Penn State Scandal: Jerry Sandusky Rumored To Have 'Pimped' Boys To Donors.

"I can give you a rumor and I can give you something I think might happen," Madden said on the radio. "I hear there's a rumor that there will be a more shocking development from the Second Mile Foundation -- and hold on to your stomachs, boys, this is gross, I will use the only language I can -- that Jerry Sandusky and Second Mile were pimping out young boys to rich donors. That was being investigated by two prominent columnists even as I speak."

Because it's College Football.

Want to know what the US's religion is when it isn't Christianity?

College. Fucking. Football.

I say Penn State should not be allowed to have Football again. And all those students protesting the firing of Joe Paterno...

Well, y'all will yell at me if I say what's on my mind, so I just won't say it.

No time to really formulate thoughts, and no real burning desire to pretend I have anything deep or important to add to the conversation. This, however, hit me right in the fucking gut when I read it:

If you want to understand the cult of Joe Paterno's role in allowing a ten-year-old to be raped and his rapist never brought to justice, look at the scenes last night, as students rioted in defense of their demi-God. Winning football games morally trumps allowing a brutal child rapist to avoid criminal charges and go on to rape many more. There is no "due diligence" with respect to protecting kids from rapists. There is simply stopping them, and bringing them to justice immediately.

Makes me wonder, if Paterno was a Bishop and he did what he did, only replace Sandusky for a priest, would all those students be standing behind him then?

Agreed. I loved Jon Stewart's little monologue on that. It was brilliant.

Also... perhaps the new coach (if they ever get one), should print this out and put it on his office wall:

Got that from here, BTW.

Jerry Sandusky was interviewed by Bob Costas last night. He immediately started off by saying he was innocent. Costas responded with "Innocent?" and this is what Sandusky immediately said afterward:

“Well, I could say that, you know, I have done some of those things. I have horsed around with kids. I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and I have touched their legs, without intent of sexual contact. But, um… uh … So, if you look at it that way … uh … there are things that … that … uh … wouldn’t … uh, you know, would be accurate.”

He goes on to further shoot himself in the foot:

Costas: Are you a pedophile?
Sandusky: No.
Costas: Are you sexually attracted to young boys? To underage boys?
Sandusky: Am I sexually attracted to underage boys?
Costas: Yes.
Sandusky: Sexually attracted? You know, I enjoy young people. I love to be around them. I … but, no, I am not sexually attracted to young boys.

And his explanation of the incident allegedly witnessed by Mike McQuery:

“OK, we were showering and … and horsing around. And he (the boy) actually turned all the showers on and was actually sliding across the floor and um and we were, as I recall, possibly, like, snapping a towel and horseplay.”

This makes my skin crawl.

So Sandusky claims that he isn't a pedophile, but was just "horsing around" with underage boys, which reminds me of a joke: A horse walks into a bar and orders a drink. The bartender looks at him and says "why so long in the face". The horse replies "because Jerry Sandusky has been raping me for the past eight years"
