i love that they tried to cover this up, or so it seems by comments by his wife.

a possible new marketing campaign: get skinny, gain back weight, become obese, and die

remember folks carbs are good and healthy

moderation is the key.

carbs (too much carbs) leads to obesity, diabetes, and heart problems.

high protein diets lead to heart problems, cholesteral issues, kidney problems, and fucking bad breath.

but to swing the pendulum away from protein diets and back towards the big mac culture is stupid, especially using the evidence of one man's death as an excuse.

marie curie died of radiation poisoning. should we ban MRIs?

Um, according to his doctor and wife, his heart problems had nothing to do with his diet. He had a virus.

Also, if you read the article, you'll see that this info was provided by a vegetarian group. Of COURSE they want to give him a bad name.

I'm not taking sides. I just hate when things are misconstrued.

I don't know, I think promoting the adoption of a diet heavy in meat gives him a pretty bad name all by itself.

Atkins doesn't work. My dad lost 30 lbs on Atkins........then he started eating like a normal human being again and put it all back on.

Take a step back before you start one of these rediculous diets. Really look at the long term. Are you just looking to lose a few vanity pounds.....to look good for a wedding or something? If that's the case, fine.

If you want to lose weight for health reasons, or just lose extra weight IT WILL NOT HAPPEN WITHOUT A BALANCED DIET AND EXERCISE.

There is no pill, powder or cream that's going to get the lard out of your ass.....just good ol' fashioned sweat.

I joined Weight Watchers about 2 months ago. I've lost 20 lbs so far...at an average of 2 lbs per week. I like Weight Watchers......I feel a little goofy sitting there with housewives....but fuck it, it's working for me.

The best part about it is...I don't have to eat wierd shit. You eat what normal people eat, just eat less of it, fatty smile

COPIED

NEW YORK (AP) - Dr. Robert Atkins, whose popular diet stresses protein-rich meat and cheese over carbohydrates, weighed 258 pounds at his death and had a history of heart disease, a newspaper reported today. An Atkins spokesman said the doctor's condition, including his weight gain, stemmed from viral-induce heart problems.

Atkins died last April at age 72 after being injured in a fall on an icy street.

and what is wrong with meat?

i have just as much problem with people that promote pure vegan diets (meat is part of the reason our brains were able to evolve and is therefore a key to development of intellgence in humans).

weight watchers used to be known as "ketonic diets".

do some research on ketosis (as a state for the body), and you will find that it is potentially a very dangerous state that can be quite detrimental to your health and well-being.

the only thing that i will give to weight watchers is that they learned from some court cases, that putting someone on a ketosis diet means that they also have to take good care to keep an eye on their "patients" lest they get sick.

Everyone I know who did the Atkins diet, even properly and in stages, gained all the weight back and then some.

Four years ago, I simply cut out desserts, soda, and fast food and started walking three times a week, and I lost forty pounds in three months.

Go figure. whatever It doesn't have to be hard, people.

i have a problem with anything what claims to be a miracle and "easy" when it comes to making a difficult lifestyle change such as losing weight, quitting smoking, etc.
there is no easy way to change the way you've been living your life. and cash is right, without a proper balanced diet and exercise you won't lose the weight and keep it off.

i've been practicing ashtanga yoga for about a year, and have also started watching what i eat. in the past year, i have gone down two pants sizes, actually gained weight (muscle mass), lost inches, and have more energy.

throwing yourself into keitosis is not always the smartest thing. our kidneys would start "freaking out" for a reason.

You got it Sorcha... I tried it out of curiosity - didn't lose much weight but realised the importance of EFAs and killing whitey.

(whitey being white sugar, white flour, white rice) I have lots more energy and feel way better and still cook what I want... whitey comes in doses and that works for me.

At 258 lbs, it's safe to say he was overweight. Virus or not.

He ate too much meat.

(God, I thought I would never say that...)

The lesson is, moderation. I agree with that. Too much carbs are bad. Too much meat is bad. Balance both, and it's all good.

And I wish the vegans would at least try a burger or something. Humans still need the fat, animal protein, and minerals that meat can provide, no matter how much we tell ourselves we don't.

early access to meat protein helped bring evolution of the modern brain. it is a fairly common theory among nutritional athropologists. changes to our behaviour patters led early "humans" to realize the benefits of protein sources. adding fire into the mix brought it even further than that. the human brain wasn't always a mound of folded electrical mush. meat protein gave us that blessing, which gave us higher thought and intellegence.

unless we have a time machine, this is theory.

but i choose to have faith in this theory as oppossed to "god made me smart".

meat protein is good.

the choice not to eat meat is also good and valid, but i choose meat.

Goddamn that Atkins straight to hell! This whole low-carb thing is pissing me off. It's way out of hand. It's gotten to the point where Burger King and Hardee's are selling hamburgers without buns! Tell me, how the hell do you have a hamburger without a fucking bun? Why are people villainizing bread and grain? Are they so bad that it's worse to eat a fucking dinner roll than a plate of fatty bacon? What's so wrong with just following the Food Pyramid and exercising? When are you so desperate to lose weight that you're eating a burger out of a paper bag? [sigh] Low-carb, shmow-shmarb!

COPIED BELOW

Aimed at nothing less than totally restructuring the diets of Americans, Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy may well accomplish its goal. Dr. Walter C. Willett gets off to a roaring start by totally dismantling one of the largest icons in health today: the USDA Food Pyramid that we all learn in elementary school. He blames many of the pyramid's recommendations--6 to 11 servings of carbohydrates, all fats used sparingly--for much of the current wave of obesity. At first this may read differently than any diet book, but Willett also makes a crucial, rarely mentioned point about this icon: "The thing to keep in mind about the USDA Pyramid is that it comes from the Department of Agriculture, the agency responsible for promoting American agriculture, not from the agencies established to monitor and protect our health." It's no wonder that dairy products and American-grown grains such as wheat and corn figure so prominently in the USDA's recommendations.
Willett's own simple pyramid has several benefits over the traditional format. His information is up-to-date, and you won't find recommendations that come from special-interest groups. His ideas are nothing radical--if we eat more vegetables and complex carbohydrates (no, potatoes are not complex), emphasize healthy fats, and enjoy small amounts of a tremendous variety of food, we will be healthier. You'll find some surprises as well, such as doubts about the overall benefits of soy (unless you're willing to eat a pound and a half of tofu a day), and that nuts, with their "good" fat content, are a terrific snack. Relying on research rather than anecdotes, this is a solidly written nutritional guide that will show you the real story behind how food is digested, from the glycemic index for carbs to the wisdom of adding a multivitamin to your diet. Willett combines research with matter-of-fact language and a no-nonsense tone that turns academic studies into easily understandable suggestions for living. --Jill Lightner

COPIED BELOW - THE TEN WORST FOODS TO CONSUME (bread is on there)

10. Fruit drinks. Not to be confused with fruit juices, fruit drinks are 10 per cent or less real fruit sugar. They're loaded with artificial colouring and sucrose. Definitely teeth rotters.

9. White bread. Yes, this is a junk food. Everytime you're looking at a slice of white bread you are seeing a slice of sugar -- it acts in the body the same way.

8. Doughnut. It's white bread dipped and deep-fried and sugar. What can be worse? No wonder there's a big hole in the middle, it's a nutritional zero.

7. Decaffeinated coffee. An excellent way to remove the caffeine and add chemical solvent residue right into your favourite beverage.

6. Pop. Let's see now, how do you spell increased bone breakage? P-O-P.

5. Diet pop. You get all the dandy benefits of pop, plus artificial sweetener, which has been shown in studies to actually increase your sugar cravings and alter your brain chemistry.

4. Sugary breakfast cereals. Now here's a guarantee: If you want to start your day in a low lifeforce mode, then this is the junk breakfast for you.

3. Deep-dish pizza. This is an excellent way to stack, jack and pack your G.I. tract with one big dollop of sodium, dough and fat -- an overnight weight-gain wonder.

2. Ice cream. Here's a beauty, high in sugar and high in fat, for another whack attack on your pancreas and your arteries.

And the number one worst junk food hands down is...

1. French fries and potato chips. Here's why: Yes, it's unparalleled sodium-loading enzyme-dead food. But new information now shows that it's high in acrylimide, a known cancer-causing agent. In fact, the amount of acyrlimide in a serving of fast-food French fries is 300 times above the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's limit set for one glass of water.

Now, every behaviour carries with it it's own consequences. It's no different with nutrition. Reality or fantasy, take your pick. Choose wisely.

Okay, granted, white bread is complete shit. But c'mon now. It's hardly the only bread out there. There are lierally thousands, if not more, different kinds of breads. Carbs, in moderation, are essential to the body's functioning properly. Stuffing meat and cheese into your face all day is terrible for you, period.
It's already been said...you want to lose weight, get off your ass and move around a little, and stop eating shit.
