This is great, a white kid from Africa who moved to the US in 1997 was apparantly suspended from school when he attempted to win an African American award.

Well, he's definately African...more so than most people in this country. But he's probably not American yet although i'm not real sure about the citizenship process one goes through when one's under 18.

In any case, i would think that the suspension is total bullshit. I doubt that the intention was to cause emotional distress... Still, i don't see why it would warrant a suspension based on the small news story. Maybe there's more to it, but a quick google search revealed nothing that i could find.

And how fast would the hammer come down on that school if there were a whites only scholarship? But there are scholarships such as that available. Usually they're called Itallian American, Irish American, Slovak American, etc... Scholarships and the qualifications are proof of ancestry of that particular ethnicity and proof of positive contribution and promotion of the said ethnic group. Technically with my last name i could qualify for a Polish American Scholarship, but based on my ethnic history, i could do so many others (i'm a mut.) However, sinse i never contributed significantly to any particular ehtnic group, i would more than likely not do so.

This poor kid was an unfortunate victim of political correctness. "Africian-American" implies dual citizenship, and most of those who call themselves this do not have it.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. struggled to break down the barriers between blacks and whites and fought for equality, and in his wake, many blacks have struggled to rebuild those walls and separate themselves from everyone else. "Separate, but equal" was a white, racist policy. I don't see why it appeals to so many.

The kid is South African. He was born under one of the most brutally racist regimes the world has ever known. He moves to one of the whitest states in the union to go to a school that is 98% white and he decides to fuck with black kids on King Day.

Its one of the hundreds of idiotic achievement awards that everybody with a pulse gets at graduation. If black people want to be called african americans and they want to call white people white, why then are white people not insisted on being called European Americans? Some white people have closer ties to europe than blacks do to africa and obviously some whites have closer ties to africa than most blacks here.
