My god, what fresh hell will this administration next inflict on those poor white men who've been running shit in this country for the past 250 years?
Okay, seriously though. I hope Pat Buchanan is locked in a janitor's closet in the MSNBC studios, weeping uncontrollably, gently patting the testicles of Herman Goreing that he keeps in his breast pocket, whispering 'It'll be okay, Hermie, we'll make our comeback yet.'
Fuck you, Pat Buchanan, & everyone that looks like you. Its my generation's country now & we're rapidly evolving past you.

You know, I used to just write off attitudes like this from old people because I thought "They were raised in a different time, a different culture." Then I look at my grandparents and realize that they grew up in the same time as people like Pat Buchanan, and yet they don't have "white people built this country" mentalities. In fact, they voted for Obama, and I'll be damned if I can remember a single racist thing come out of their mouths. They didn't express any opposition to my father marrying not only a non-Jew, but a non-white, non-American woman. That's when I realize that people like Pat Buchanan have no excuse for their ignorance and enormous sense of entitlement.

For proof that its not an age thing you don't have to look any further than Glenn 'I think Obama's a closet racist' Beck, who's seventeen years older than me, ten years younger than my father & as blathering, stupid, entitled, & frightened as Buchanan. My father was raised in a different time, I've heard him use some choice words that don't speak highly of his sense of equality, that didn't stop him from welcoming my former girlfriend into our family, despite her being a Mexican immigrant. Fuck those guys. There's no real excuse.

Both of my maternal grandparents were born in the 19th century, and both would have been absolutely appalled by the kind of crap that Buchanan and his ilk spew forth. That certainly shows you how much of an excuse Buchanan has.
Ah, the sound of the Elephant's dying squeals. That sound helps me sleep at night. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I have made CDs of it to listen to when I feel bad.
Pat Buchanan is gone. His bullshit, racist, white supremacist views are soooooooooooo last century.
This was hilarious to see.
And it's nice to know that Sotomayor was confirmed. When I saw her first hearing, I didn't like her. Then I did more research, and saw her second one, and I was sold. This is great news and I am proud of my Government, for once.
I think Bill Hicks said it best (start 28 seconds in):

It's so, so beautiful to watch him disintegrate.
I've got a crush on Rachel, too, just so 'yall know. Am I the only one?
HELL no. I've said it at least three times already
And to NateHevens, regarding to elephants dying squeals, many years ago, an arrogant Democratic Party split and put up two presidential candidates allowing the new Republican Party to get their candidate elected (A. Lincoln). Do you also wish that never happened? We should always have a multi party system.

Are you high?
First of all, this isn't anit-white talk, this is white people saying that Old Racist White Assholes are no longer representative of Most White People. And we're all quite happy of that. Feel free to come join the party. Check your prejudices & sense of entitlement at the door. The beer is in the back, cups are a dollar.
Second of all, every time I hear about the Republican Party being the party of Lincoln, I think, that's great & all, but then you have to also be the party of The Southern Strategy:
In American politics, the Southern strategy refers to a purported Republican method of winning Southern states in the latter decades of the 20th century and first decade of the 21st century by exploiting racism among white voters. Some analysts think widespread demographic shifts and the election of Barack Obama as president in 2008 are signs that the Southern strategy is declining in significance.
Note: "Southern", as used in this section, refers to members of Congress from the eleven states that made up the Confederate States of America in the American Civil War. "Northern" refers to members from the other 39 states, regardless of the geographic location of those states.
* Southern Democrats: 1-20 (5%-95%) (only Senator Ralph Yarborough of Texas voted in favor)
* Southern Republicans: 0-1 (0%-100%) (this was Senator John Tower of Texas)
* Northern Democrats: 45-1 (98%-2%) (only Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia opposed the measure)
* Northern Republicans: 27-5 (84%-16%) (Senators Bourke Hickenlooper of Iowa, Barry Goldwater of Arizona, Edwin L. Mechem of New Mexico, Milward L. Simpson of Wyoming, and Norris H. Cotton of New Hampshire opposed the measure)
As soon as Republicans cop to that shit, they can feel free to talk about the Emancipation Proclamation as much as they want.

So, no, you did not do it right.
OK, I didn't intend to defend 150 years of Republican history. Let me have a couple of PBR,s and I'll just sit in the back of the room.

That's more like it. Hell, have one of mine.
In all seriousness, I agree with you, having at least two viable parties is important to the level of discourse in this country. Even if I'm a stonecold liberal through & through (& I doubt I am), I'd at least like to see some life from the Party-in-Opposition so that the bills that get passed aren't completely retarded, & hell, I may not like them but the represent somebody. Of course, that's the problem, they haven't been representing anyone but the most radical fringe base of their party.
Senator John McCain-- rightly or wrongly-- made a name for himself as a moderate maverick (whatever the hell that means), & to ensure that he could carry his party's lunatic, yahoo, fringe base, brought in the most unqualified, unintelligent, unintelligible candidate for high office since VADM James Stockdale. And is currently playing its role as the loyal opposition by explaining the health care debate with by explaining debt & taxes with pictures of eggs & dragon. And confusing Saint George with Sir Lancelot, Aesop's Fables with The Arthurian Legends. And pictographs! On the fucking floor of the Senate. Pictures with dragons & Sir Tax-A-Lot & shit. In the Capitol Building. No foolin'. Seriously, this is what they're up to. That & wondering if the President was born in Africa.
Anyway, the point is the remark about the death throes of the GOP is, in fact, very accurate. However they emerge from this-- & they will emerge, either as a fringe right wing 3rd party, or as sensible, mainstream, fiscal conservatives-- the Grand Old Party of Reagen, Bush, & Bush, has had its spine broken, its on its last legs.

this is a remarkably simplistic and factually devoid description of a major event in American history. i might actually know LESS about history for having read that.
the party didn't split out of hubris, it split over slavery.
from wikipedia:
The Democratic Party was divided over the issue of slavery. At the convention in Charleston in April 1860, 51 Southern Democrats walked out over a platform dispute, led by William Lowndes Yancey. Yancey and the Alabama delegation left the hall and they were followed by the delegates of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, three of the four delegates from Arkansas, and one of the three delegates from Delaware.
essentially, the democrats split and the people that split went on to secede from the union. if you're going to whrbgl about history at least do everyone a favor and make it interesting or entertaining because there's nothing sadder than someone just being stupid.
and don't worry, there won't be a single party election in this country. if the republican party splits (ohnoez, just like the democrats did 150 years ago) then there will be THREE parties running. one of the split parties will gain popularity become the second major party and things will continue. the green party split off from the democrats recently, and hopefully the christian conservatives will split off from the republican party and we can get back to having sane arguments.
