Peter Cammarano, mayor of Hoboken, set a new record in New Jersey politics when he was arrested-- along with 44 others-- just twenty-two days after being sworn into his office.

The New York Times said:
The mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus, a state assemblyman and dozens of others were rounded up early Thursday as the F.B.I. swept across four counties in New Jersey as part of a two-year corruption and money-laundering investigation, the authorities said.

So they're in good company along with half of the City Council of Jersey City, as well as a members of an insular community of Syrian Jews from Brooklyn, NY, & Deal & Elberon, NJ. Its been a fun morning watching this unfold. First reports mentioned two dozen arrested, then that number became roughly 33, it now stands at 44. Knowing how corrupt New Jersey politics can be this has been a lot of fun to watch. Although, we're all a little concerned here in my office since Jersey City is one of our clients & at this point there might not be anyone left in the City with the power to sign our checks.

Edited to add delicious irony:

And Mr. Cammarano expressed confidence that he would be elected, no matter what, according to the complaint. “Right now, the Italians, the Hispanics, the seniors are locked down,” he is quoted as saying. “Nothing can change that now. ... I could be, uh, indicted, and I’m still gonna win 85 to 95 percent of those populations.”

I am giggling with glee over this. The whole thing, really. After so many years of inaction by the prosecutor's office...it's great to see these fucks finally get in trouble for what everyone KNEW was going on.

I work for an urban redevelopment consulting firm, so we deal with a lot of local NJ pols in our work, they're all pretty scummy, its hard to imagine a state much more corrupt than this.

Needless to say, there's been a few high fives in the office today, & one of the partners is giggling like a school-girl in their office.

It is often joked that the only place more corrupt than NJ is New Orleans. I think the joke may be wrong.

Not defending NJ in any way, but Philly doesn't have that good of a reputation either, you know? biggrin

I'll keep that in mind the next time forty-four (44!) Philadelphia officials get picked up all on the same day. The FBI had more wire in City Hall than Comcast did & all they got out of the deal was one conviction & one acquittal. I mean, sure Philadelphia is corrupt as the day is long, but at least we're apparently better at hiding it.

Also, I'm hearing disturbing rumors about body-part selling on the part of the rabbis. Anyone else hear anything about this strange rumor?

In separate money laundering complaints, several rabbis from Brooklyn and New Jersey were charged with offenses ranging from the trafficking of kidneys from Israeli donors to laundering proceeds from selling fake Gucci and Prada bags.

Yeah, I just read this in the updated New York Times story:

Another person, Levy-Izhak Rosenbaum of Brooklyn, was accused of enticing vulnerable people to give up a kidney for $10,000 and then selling the organ for $160,000.

^^^^^ I read that, as well. The headline seems too monstrous to be true: "Rabbis harvesting human organs for profit."

In fact, it's so weird it sounds like it was lifted almost word-for-word out of some fundamentalist hate-group literature.

Oh no, nobody does corruption like Louisiana. We may not have invented the Good Ol' Boy system, but we raised it to an art form.

You know, this is really a win-win-win situation. People usually just give their organs away when they die. Why not get a little money for them when you can use it? People needing organs don't have to pray for someone to die to get the kidney they need OR THEY WILL DIE, and someone makes a tidy profit. This is why Jews control all the money - we're just smarter than you.

After setting a record for stupid when he got busted yesterday, less than a month into his term, the Mayor of Hoboken is now pulling a Blogo. This story is going to keep getting funnier, weirder, & probably wind up taking down at least a few more people before it wraps up. The Mayor of Jersey City is attracting some attention, now, too.

So many incumbents are getting taken down in this thing, I'm now considering running for mayor somewhere in North Jersey. I'm torn on using the campaign slogan 'Dangerously incompetent, but at least he's openly corrupt.' or 'Hey, you know you could do a lot worse.' Either way, I promise my office will always be for sale to the highest bidder, continuing the fine tradition of New Jersey politics.

Too incompetent, to be corrupt is better then your first slogan but I like the second.

I'm just incompetent enough to be corrupt, but not enough to actually accomplish anything for the public. I also am toying with "is he really worse than the devils you know?"
