"Your Mommy Kills Animals''

Animal rights advocates will single out small children at performances of ``The Nutcracker'' in the next few weeks by handing out fliers saying ``Your Mommy Kills Animals'' to youngsters whose mothers are wearing fur.
``Children can't look up to a mom in a battered-raccoon hat or a crushed coyote collar,'' said Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. ``Maybe when they're confronted by their own children's hurt looks, fur-wearers' cold hearts will melt.''
The fliers include a color drawing of a woman plunging a large bloody knife into the belly of a terrified rabbit. The fliers urge kids to ``ask your mommy how many dead animals she killed to make her fur clothes.

I understand the point but don't fuck with kids. That's putting yourself in the same league as Operation Rescue and their targeting the children of abortion doctors. They would wait outside the kids' school and when they saw the kids they would start screaming, "Your (Daddy/Mommy) murders babies!!!" while holding up posters with aborted fetuses.

This is the same thing and is just sad.

Yeah, this goes way too far. But PETA has shown a willingness to go too far, which, in my way of thinking, makes them ineffective in really winning anyone over to animal rights.

"Fur-wearer's cold hearts"?!!! So, because I have a leather jacket, I'm some sort of soulless monster to be kept away from children?

I agree with all of the above. People just get carried away, and that anti-abortion stuff really pisses me off. Let people make their own decisions and leave the kids alone.

I think I would beat to death and wear the cured skin of any PETA member that gave graphic material to my child (should I have one); then sue them for distributing pornography by claiming the bloody knife looks like a strap-on and the woman is fucking that rabbit to death.

And do you notice how there's little or no mention of the father? Because men don't wear fur or leather? Or because PETA are craven cowards and think mom's won't beat them to death and wear their skin as a jacket?

We have a local 'exotic' meat store in north Seattle and I'm going to go buy a butchered rabbit from them today and eat it. I encourage you all to do the same.

Fuck you, PETA, you're add just cost a rabbit its life. Now you're one in the hole!

I agree with Mqx.

While the concept of PETA is not at all a bad one, the extent that they take it to is rather disturbing. I would be horrified if some strange handed my child a graphic flier, much less telling them basically how much 'mommy is evil.' And, I'd sue them for....something.

Yeah.

personally, i think wearing fur is wholly unnecessary and wasteful, not to mention cruel, but this goes too far
i had the same reaction when PETA rolled up to a Barnum & Bailey circus protest i was at
at first it was cool, they were handing out balloons and cups of popcorn that had anti-animal circus messages, but then their jumbo-tron truck came
they rolled back and forth in front of all the children playing footage of elephants getting beaten and shot
we were standing near the sidewalk holding signs asking people to consider a cruelty-free circus next year, and it wasn't until PETA arrived that people started saying nasty things to us
"look, honey. you should've worn your fur coat"
"who are they, daddy?" "stupid fuckers that don't know shit about shit!"

PETA definitely has their place, and they accomplish alot of good, but children need to be handled a bit more delicately
besides, you know the parents just spent the rest of the day telling the kids how wrong PETA was, so it was probably counter-productive

Did anyone read the story about PETA sending a letter to the suicide bombers in Palestine? They asked them to please STOP...using donkees as transport for their suicide bombs. That incident, coupled with the one I just heard makes me think that they have finally freaked the fuck out. Or maybe they are desperate for free publicity...

Fawk PETA. I love animals, and a few people I look up to are members of that group, but I completely disagree with their tactics in general.

it is PETA's extreme acts like this that keep them and animal rights in the news.
the whole point is that it pisses people off and creates controversy.

it's important to understand this 'act' is NOT meant to win anyone over. they aren't trying for 'new converts' as a direct result of thier actions. there is a reason we hear 'PETA has finally gone too far' every 6 months or so.

they are getting ideas out. not specific ideas - they don't need you or anyone else to agree with any specific message of theirs... the only thing they need to keep fresh on the publics mind are broad concepts like 'people find wearing animals disgusting'. it doesn't matter if you dismiss this as an act of PETA, because in a years time you'll barely remember this specific incident anyway... but you may turn up your nose when you see a fur coat. and if not you, then maybe the person next to you will.

that's the beauty of the 'donkey' letter, for example. they don't expect people to suddenly equate the life of an animal with a human. but they do force people to at least consider this concept.- they force it into public discourse.

and they are very, very good at it.

throwing red paint on fur wearers once seemed as 'absurd' as any of their current actions. and i would argue it was one of the most effective animal rights campaigns ever, regardless of whether or not you 'agreed' with it at the time.

Ok, as effective as their shock tactics are, I find it tasteless.

When I heard about the dominatrix whips that were deemed 'non-cruelty based products', I lost the ability to take them seriously.

When I heard about the 'tofu for the cannibal' stunt, I seriously questioned their intelligence.

But to do this to kids, I think PETA ought to be disbanded, right now!

The best idea is to send out a campaign called 'IGNORE THE TREE HUGGING HIPPIES'. All we have to do is not take PETA seriously, and even flaunt our fur wearing, meat eating ways.

Besides, animals are a renewable resource. No need to make synthetics when we have furs. Can't they see the logic in that?

not surprising, since they are 'shock' tactics. wouldn't be very effective if nobody found them tasteless.

yet instead, you and so many others become incensed at their tactics, and cause them to be both newsworthy and discussion worthy, thus making their tactics successful.

oh, and they don't really care if you take them seriously. that's not the point of their actions at all.

soylent green is a renewable resource too.

as long as you define animals as a 'resource', you're right, there is no reason not to treat them as such. maybe one day you'll see them in a new light.

How are they successful again? I wasn't kidding above. I'm so pissed off about those tactics I may eat rabbit a day for a fucking month. I'll find out how many people stopped wearing fur because their kids were subjected to that flyer and I'll eat two rabbbits for each of them. It won't be hard, because my guess will be 'none' of them.

Seriously, is someone going to all of a sudden go 'Holy shit! Wearing rabbits is wrong! That flyer you used to scare my kid really opened my eyes!'

Someone mentioned it above and wasn't far off: animal rights is really pretty close to freedom of choice issues. There isn't a lot of mind changing. You either believe animals are a resource, or you don't; and there isn't an argument that's going to convince you (me) that rabbit fur isn't soft in coat form.

Now, do I think those rabbits should be treated like shit? Of course not. Just like there really isn't too many people that are pro abortion (as opposed to pro choice). I believe that some fur and food animals should be treated better... but damn, if they move too much, the meat gets all tough and gamey.

Yeah, I just went to P.E.T.A. to go check it out and it is a lot like what it sounds.

I am a member of P.E.T.A. but I don't always agree with what they do. At this point it looks like they have gone too far.

Charity begins at home and I would teach my children and friends about fur but it shouldn't be forced upoun unsuspecting victims. It's harassment in this form. A flyer or leaflet is cool but harassing and traumatizing children is far from being cool.

I totally agree with this. In the long run you will turn your nose up at fur. You may not remember why but you will still do it. I don't think that P.E.T.A. would defend animals but hurt children. These are smart people were talking about.

I just think they are going to far with the 'mommy stabbing rabbit' image on the comic book they are planning on handing out, but then again I haven't seen any of the newest gory comic books and video games out there lately that are targeted at children.
