Peta send tofu and veggie burgers to cannibal

Germany's self-confessed cannibal killer Armin Meiwes has been sent a vegetarian cookbook and a Christmas hamper full of veggie burgers and tofu.

Animals rights group Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is behind the stunt and says it would be a major coup if it could convert Meiwes to vegetarianism.

Meiwes is on trial for killing, dismembering and eating the flesh of another man.

He has admitted killing and eating his victim, but denies it was murder. Peta is hoping the mouth-watering recipes in the book and the hamper of vegetarian foods will persuade him to mend his ways.

The vegetarian starter kit was sent to Meiwes' prison cell in the town of Kassel, where the trial is taking place.

Peta spokesman Juergen Faulmann said: "What this man did to a German computer expert is done to other creatures every day.

"The cruel scenario of slaughtering, cutting up, portioning, freezing and eating of body parts is the grim reality for more than 450 million sentient individuals that are killed in this country every year."

"People who eat meat feel disgusted by human flesh. Vegetarians feel disgusted by any sort of meat."

Now... I'm all for vegetarianism... but whoa. surreal

Tofu = puke

Sending that shit to him will not help at all - it would personally make me a more avid "cannibal" (or just plain carnivore!)

I wonder how his victim's family feels about PETA using the incedent for some cheap publicity.

I remember all the (thankfully premature) post-9/11 Death of Irony talk...

satire, on the other hand, is indeed looking pretty pale & feeble compared to what you can find by opening any newspaper (or clicking on a wire service)...

PETA has fully embraced this notion that anything they do to get publicity is good for them. Unfortunately, I don't think it changes anyone's mind. And I know for my part I love to have a nice big fat steak after I read about some dumb-ass thing they've done.

What dumbasses. The guy is a cannibal. I would think that is more of a psychological disorder than just a simple choice to eat flesh. Way to go, fucking hippies...

If you believe in something, you try to support it.
I think peta is great.

I think PETA used to be great. They seem to have lost their collective minds since then.

I agree but dont you ever think they just go overboard? I dont think companies should do test on animals but I would never support PETA because they always come up looking like idiots after stunts like this.

Fuck Yeah, sometimes they go overboard - but there are certain things where it is better to do too much/or care too much versus caring and doing too little.

I'm sure sending this guy their recipe books probably won't help.
But at least they care to try.

Why don't they send that stuff to the guys who win hotdog, hamburger, turkey, etc. eating contests? Those guys probably get more fame than this cannibal anyways.

But hey, if that's what it takes for me to get my hands on free tofu... volunteers?

PETA is the most effective animal rights organization in the world. wacky stunts like this, although "offensive" to some, give them press, which helps them build support and donations. the money and support is then directly used to fight animal cruelty in the meat and cosmetic testing industries, and win major victories that few people would disagree with. also, by casting themselves as "extremists", they're able to define themselves as the organization with unwavering support for all animal rights related causes.

PETA's efforts are mostly harmful to the movement. they make all vegetarians and animal rights activists look like lunatics.

they're trying to sell the point that animals are more or less equal to humans, which 99% of the population is never going to accept. it would make a lot more sense to put their time and money into promoting organic farming, and towards improving animal rights on a smaller scale. these kinds of stunts are just a waste of everyone's time.

the animal rights movement has a lot of momentum, and has made significant advances in the humane treatment of animals. the backlash was inevitable, but doesn't seem to have slowed the movement much. you have to give them credit for their resourcefulness and tenacity.

(rant about social darwinism and the false duality of "man vs. nature" deleted.)

Yeah, but why advocate anything less than what they believe? It may not be entirely practical, but it's honest.

Okay, so I can think of a lot of reasons myself to advocate something less than the extent of what one believes. I guess my point is, it's nice to see someone exercising some serious symbology.

The reality of course is, well, a lot more nuanced to say the least. Tell me though, you (and they themselves) keep saying that theyre the most effective animal rights organization in the world. I've yet to ever seen an explaination or explication of why that supposed to be so unless of course you merely pull a Halliburton and exclude everybody else by definition.
