Is it sad that I was actually worried for a while that it would be built?

Hardly, my friend, hardly.

'Phelps has said that national tragedies, including the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the Columbine High School shootings, are God's punishments for the nation's tolerance of homosexuals.'

Wow. Insane paranoia doesn't even scratch the surface. This guy should be committed.

Well, yeah, but I'm just saying that in hindsight it's pretty obvious that this monument was never going to be allowed in any sane community, and yet I was so cynical/jaded that I actually thought it would be allowed.

There's plenty of evidence that the usual rules of sanity have been set aside. I'm very pleased it hasn't gone ahead, but before the event, nothing was completely predictable.

Someone needs to sit these people down and just be like 'Hey, remember that whole, compassion part of the bible? Yea. You're going to hell.'

And hey, fuck you guys, I was baptized, I'm fucking saved.

That asswipe Phelps brings his group to my school every year and causes trouble for a week in the library mall. They basically stand in a big circle in the most crowded thoroughfare of the school and yell "whore" and faggot" at every woman and man, respectively, who pass. Then, a crowd usually gathers and it turns into a big spectacle where either the church members try to goad students into anger or vice versa. Lately, local churches and other groups hold silent protests away from the group to draw attention elsewhere (away from them). I respect their right to free speech (although it does reach borderline threatening at times), but I have to say I get a little kick out of it when I see an egg splash off of one the dipshits out there spewing this filth.

Honestly if some guy was standing in a hallway and yelled 'whore' at me or the girl I was with I would fucking clock him. Thats just me.

How is that not illegal? That sounds like disturbing the peace to me. They should be hauled away.

I don't blame you for thinking it was a possiblity. I remember hearing about that and freaked out that it was even a thought. It's amazing that at this day and age people are still completely ignorant. But I'm sure that will always remain.

have you read their site? they cover it in their FAQ. apparently they feel it's more compassionate to warn everyone of their impending damnation than to sit idly.

I really want to kick that guy in the balls. It would be worth a few days in the slam.

If he had built that thing, he'd have to put up a new one every night. People would make daily visits from all over the country with sledgehammers.

I don't think this is over. I think that the city council's insistence on putting the Ten Commandments up is a mistake, and means that the Phelps assholes might win in appellate court. The position of the high courts is that any government-sponsored display of something from one religion must include something from all of them.

It would have been smarter to just junk the idea of the park altogether.

At my school, they just need a permit from the administration. Feh.

The last time some jerkoff was spouting insults at all of us students, I ended up kissing some random girl in front of him. (She initiated it). Then I walked to my Lit class, laughing my ass off. It was a good day. biggrin

Don't you just love convenient interpretation?

Give anyone long enough and they'll rationalize any action to coincide with like morals/beliefs. Oh, what big, beautiful brains we have!

They actually stand in public places and scream insults at you for not being one of them???
I think that in Canada, persecuting everyone who doesn't follow your religious beliefs is treated the same as persecuting a particular group, even though it's the majority that you're spreading hate about. Thus it would fall under our hate crime laws and he could be charged.
I hope so, at least.

They're not Christians. Don't let them tell you they are. The book proves they aren't. Only worry about retards to the extent that it is necessary.

I go to WMU.

It wasn't that guy... it was some other religious nut who wanted to show us all the error of our ways. I really don't mind if someone gets a permit and wants to read the Bible to a group of students in a courtyard, but screaming insults is NOT cool, no matter what religion you are.

What if your religion involved screaming insults? A sort of Tourettes Zen?
