it's unconstitutional. period. this smacks of the image of the USSR/KGB that I was brought up w/as a little kid during the Cold War.

"security will not come at the price of freedom" George W. Bush

Ben Franklin said something to the effect of anyone willing to give up freedom for national security deserves neither.

what's wrong with doing coke tongue

seriously, having worked in a public library (until recent unemployment mad ), our library has been one of the most publicly known to go against the section that allows the government to search library records without notifying those being searched and puts a gag on us.

yes, had I been working in a small branch where I might be the only person on duty (which is theoretical...they really wouldn't come to me) and asked for information on who's checked out "such and such" material. I wouldn't even be allowed to call my supervisor or I could be arrested. It goes far beyond Constitutional court orders. Actually, it violates the writ of habeas corpus provisions of the Constitution as well.

It's a good thing though that Bernie Sanders, I-Vt, is heading up the House of Reps to amend the Patriot Act.

I think this is reminiscent of the Hollywood blacklisting of the 50s.

But who knows, I havent heard anything too absurd yet so maybe the watchdog group isnt too bad. Scarey they have that much power, but in these times it may be necessary, abuse of power however is unavoidable.

What do you think of the feds profiling and spying on people for having attended any number of protests aganst US policies?
Do you think they should be able to spy on you in your own home, even after the protest is over?

What do you think of the patriot act in general?

FUCK NO. The Thomas Jefferson quote says it all.

Fuck amending it. Repeal it. If I want to build bombs in my home and start my own anti-government group with guns and military surplus stuff on a compound somewhere in the middle of the woods in the middle of nowhere, it is my constitutional right to do so, isn't it? Ok, maybe not the bombs part, but the rest is true, right? This is really bothersome.

I always thought it was Franklin

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Nor are they likely to end up with either.”
-- Benjamin Franklin

Here's a good one from Teddy

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
-- Theodore Roosevelt

Here's a good one from a writer at the Baltimore Sun. I forget his name

"When a government seeks to paint any opposition as unpatriotic and any dissent as treason, when it uses its allies in industry and the media to hound skeptics and blacklist celebrities, when it attempts to paint legitimate questions of policy as either a vote for America or a vote for dictatorship, that's not freedom any more.

That's fascism."

This one is good too

“Peace is not the absence of war. It is the presence of justice.”
- Representative Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), the only member of Congress to vote against a resolution granting George W. Bush the unlimited use of military force in the “War On Terrorism”

And we'll finish up with two founding fathers and FDR

"No experiment can be more interesting than that we are now trying, and which we trust will end in establishing the fact, that man may be governed by reason and truth. Our first object should therefore be, to leave open to him all the avenues to truth. The most effectual hitherto found, is the freedom of the press. It is, therefore, the first shut up by those who fear the investigation of their actions."

Thomas Jefferson

"Among the most formidable of the obstacles which the new Constitution will have to encounter may readily be distinguished the obvious interest of a certain class of men in every State to resist all changes which may hazard a diminution of the power, emolument, and consequence of the offices they hold under the State establishments; and the perverted ambition of another class of men,who will... hope to aggrandize themselves by the confusions of their country,..."

Alexander Hamilton

"In politics, nothing ever happens by accident. If it happened, you can bet it was planned that way."

Franklin Delano Roosevelt

the patriot act totally kicks ass. i love the patriot act.

all of congress TOTALLY read the whole thing between when it came out at midnight and was voted on at nine am. just ask congressman Ron Paul

it was totally written fast fast quickaroo style after september the eleventh and not before in myriad other bills that weren't voted down time and time again for violating the constitution!

they are going to use it only on terrorists, and never regular citizens.

they already have busted thousands of terrorists with it.

it is in no way a huge step towards a fascist orwellian nation and will never be used to crush protest here in the fatherland when everyone wises up~ which they won't cause there isn't anything to wise up to since it's all just a big CO-INCIDENCE!

anyone who thinks different is a traitor in the face of my (and every other red-blooded american's) bold displays of patriotic support for the non-newspeak-ian-ly entitled USA patriot act. pfft!
