Breaking news banner on CNN. No details yet.

Sen. Ted Stevens defeated for re-election by Democrat Mark Begich, according to release from Begich's campaign.

It's a release from Begich's staff so I have to take this with a grain of salt. Personally I would rather see him forcibly ousted from the Senate but then it gives Palin a chance to get her slimy ass in there.

Probably depends on the margin of victory, AK law, etc.

I haven't seen the final numbers, but the last time I saw an official update, Begich was ahead by outside the margin in which the loser can request a recount paid for by the state, and if they're calling it, that lead was probably certified. If Stevens wanted a recount, he'd have to fork over the cash for it himself, and it's unlikely he's going to be able to get donors to help, given the looming vote to boot him out even if he did win.

So yeah, he might actually be done.

When's the last time you saw "Tombstone?" I think a nasty Powers Boothe (one of the creepiest men alive) quote is plenty good, actually.

Stevens has officially conceded.

Convicted Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) conceded his race to Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D) Wednesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the Associated Press declared the Democrat the winner.

The moral of this story is that being convicted of seven ethics violations will just barely render you unqualified to be a United States Senator in Alaska. A victory, but a little bit scary at the same time.

I believe the full qualifications are:

1. Be a legal adult resident of Alaska

2. Have not chopped up family with an axe in a fit of winter-induced cabin fever.

That depends on who they are chopping up. If they, by result of chopping, dispense ultimate justice...
