I'm just curious.

Also, if you are a gun-owner who didn't vote for Obama but consider yourself a Democrat or a liberal, please post here.

I am a gun owner (and my voting was pretty well shown on SG). The ones I own are used for hunting, and I am very strongly in favor of licencing guns owners/users in a manner similar to licencing drivers, I do not like the idea of civilians owning assault weapons, and I support a national gun registration.

*shrugs* My family owns guns; we have a .22, a hand gun and I also own a shot gun. Last I checked, everyone in my immediate family voted for Obama as did much of my extended family on both my Dad and Mom's side.
Its not a huge deal; if you look at the voting map of Wisconsin, Obama swept the entire state, save for three or four counties. That includes the rural and suburban areas where there are a lot of gun owners.
I'm going to be honest, I really don't see the exact point of this thread. Were gun owners not supposed to vote for Obama, or something? If so, I missed the memo, which is a good thing, because, I really didn't want to vote for McCain smile

I'm a gun owner who voted for Obama.

I consider myself a "pro gun rights moderate". I think some gun laws make it a lot harder for criminals to get guns, and don't interfere with my second amendment rights. For example, in Illinois, you can't buy or even possess firearms unless you have a Firearm Owners ID card, issued by the state police. Also in Illinois, they do background checks at gun shows. But, I also think that some gun laws are too restrictive. For example, if you live in the city of Chicago, it's still illegal for you to possess a handgun in your own home -- according to the mayor and the city corporation counsel, anyway -- even though the U.S. Supreme Court stuck down a nearly identical handgun ban in Washington D.C. a few months ago. (My profile says Chicago but I live outside the city limits, by the way.)

This fall, the NRA said a lot of things about Obama and guns that just weren't true, and they succeeded in scaring a lot of my fellow gun nuts, uh, I mean shooting sports enthusiasts. Nevertheless, in my view, Obama is "weak on the second amendment". He has a history of supporting overly restrictive gun legislation. As a responsible and law-abiding gun owner, I'm concerned about it.

But, yeah, you gotta look at the big picture. So, I voted for Obama, and I felt really good doing it too. smile

Please re-read the thread title, then suppress the urge to comment in every thread whether or not it applies to you. It's really annoying when people are trying to have a frank and serious discussion and you constantly have to vomit uselessness all over it.

former gun owner (and planning on owning again once i don't have to worry about dealing with a mandatory and unreliable armory on base) and i voted for obama. i don't understand why this should be an issue. it's been a hoot seeing on the news lately how gun sales have jumped substantially since the election, even though there has been no signal that any drastic changes to gun laws are incoming. way to reinforce the stereotype that gun owners are paranoid! tongue

Time for stat porn! I made the chart below off of these numbers.

A few more numbers:

- The average percentage of gun ownership amongst the 201,881 respondents is 31.7%

- There are 37 states with higher than average gun ownership, of those 17 voted for Obama.

It's actually just atomicant. He owns every gun in the state.

Seriously though... I am surprised by Texas' relatively low number. Apparently they don't live up to their insane gun toting stereotype.

Not in total. That poll/graph just represents percentages.
