I always find these maps interesting, just thought I'd share.

This is what the USA looks like with votes broken down by county:

And here's what it looks like when you adjust the size of each area to reflect the population:

or a butterfly. you have failed your Rorschach test! tongue

it's interesting to see. I can't help but wonder what a viable three or four party system would do to the map.

oh hai! that little blue pool in the middle of the red in central Texas is us here in Austin! *waves*

I'm sooo getting stoned and staring at the second one.
"It's a sailboat". wink

It's actually really interesting to see it broken down that way. The red/blue states map always looks so cold and harsh. This shows that there really is a diversity of opinions across the country.

I really don't like the second map. I made one in 2004 the day after the election that got passed around all over the internet which portrayed the margin of victory county-by-county from blue to red, and represented population in saturation/value, so that anything but the most populous counties had a varying white tint to them. I think that was a much clearer representation.

I can't find the image at the moment (it was on another computer and stored on a domain that doesn't exist anymore), but it was a lot like this one.

Be glad you live in an enlighten era.

secret ballot reference

History

In Ancient Greece, secret ballots were used in several occasions, like ostracism and also to remain hidden from people seeking favors. In Ancient Rome, Laws regulating elections are collectively known as Tabellariae Leges, the first of which was introduced in 139 BC (gabinia lex)[1]. Today the practice of casting secret ballots is so commonplace that most voters would not consider that any other method might be used, yet in the 19th century it was highly controversial.

The first US president elected totally under a secret ballot system was Grover Cleveland (1892), and prior to 1884, secret ballots in the USA were not used at all.

Election violence was so common prior to that time that it was considered unremarkable. In researching the subject in the past I came across a newspaper report in Ohio in the 1870's IIRC of a quiet election where only one election related murder at a polling place happened.

I have not been able to find an online reference to it sorry the original was in a library.

Some idiot on local radio thought that purple states were states where Obama was only going to listen to what black people have to say. I'm not sure where the hell she got that from, but yeah. That is all.
