Participant at KKK initiation wounded after shots fired into sky

JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee (AP) -- A bullet fired in the air during a Ku Klux Klan initiation ceremony came down and struck a participant in the head, critically injuring him, authorities said.

Gregory Allen Freeman, 45, was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment in the Saturday night incident that wounded Jeffery S. Murr, 24.

About 10 people, including two children, had gathered for the ceremony. The man who was being initiated was blindfolded, tied with a noose to a tree and shot with paintball guns as Freeman fired a pistol in the air to provide the sound of real gunfire, Sheriff Fred Phillips said.

A bullet struck Murr on the top of the head and exited at the bottom of his skull, authorities said.

Freeman fled the ceremony but was arrested near his home, authorities said. He was released on $7,500 bail.

The fact that I saw Radiohead tonight has nothing to do with me humming 'Karma Police' right now.

s5, this could possibly be a future Darwin Award candidate...

this sounds like bullshit. bullets come down and hurt people, yes, that does happen... but not usually someone standing near you. i mean that guy would have had to fire that gun almost perfectly straight up to have it hit someone that close to him.

not only that, but the guy was tied (by noose) to a tree. that means he had at least one branch directly over his head.

seriously, this sounds like another magic bullet. but hey, maybe i'm wrong. it just seems extremely unlikely. i don't doubt the guy got hurt... but i think they're fudging the story a bit...

Almost every Darwin Award ive ever heard of involves the victim killing himself or himself AND others. This is not the scenario. Its just one idiot killing another idiot. If this qualifies for a Darwin Award then every hunting accident in the history of hunting should also fit right into that catagory.

I'm not prepared to accept that every person who hunts is an idiot, NT.

Edited to change to "idiot", add italics.

It just sucks that they have to take some many people with them while they're at it (meaning, people other than white supremists).

Evil bastards. This is definately karma at work. The chances of this even happening are pretty astronomical.

I'm with you on this - it just doesn't pass the smell test. More likely there was some other fooloishness going on which the participants were reluctant to divulge to the police.
Kind of like when you hear about those reports where someone " accidentally ' shoots themself while cleaning their gun - methinks these are predominantly suicide cover-ups.
