BBC:

Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic, one of the world's most wanted men, has been arrested in Serbia after more than a decade.

He had been indicted by the UN tribunal for war crimes and genocide over the 1995 massacre at Srebrenica.

Mr Karadzic denied the charges against him soon after the first indictment and refused to recognise the legitimacy of the UN tribunal.

The UN says Mr Karadzic's forces killed at least 7,500 Muslim men and boys from Srebrenica in July 1995 as part of a campaign to "terrorise and demoralise the Bosnian Muslim and Bosnian Croat population".

He was also charged over the shelling of Sarajevo, and the use of 284 UN peacekeepers as human shields in May and June 1995.

And about time. I hope he never gets out.

Not likely. No de-Nazification analogue in Serbia, as far as I know (I am open to sourced rebuttals, of course). So he'd be tucked in among the believers.

Now, on to Radko. May they both rot in jail for the remainder of their natural lives.

Indeed. Mladic... possibly a little less culpable, but really; 300 years instead of 500. Who'd be counting?

Ugh, finally. At the very least he won't die relatively peacefully at home like Pol Pot.

More info.

It appears that they found him by accident.

Serbian intelligence officers were on the trail of Mr Karadzic's wartime military leader, Ratko Mladic, when they stumbled upon Mr Karadzic, said the office of Serbia's war crimes prosecutor.

I think the why is much more interesting than the how.

From the New York Times today:

Why the arrest occurred now is not clear. But just weeks ago, on July 7, a new pro-Western coalition government was formed in Serbia whose overriding goal is to bring Serbia into the European Union, the world's biggest trading bloc. The European Union, meanwhile, has made delivering indicted war criminals to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague a precondition for Serbia's membership, and has been particularly scathing about the continued liberty of Mr. Karadzic.

I wonder how hard the old government was trying and how many more fugitives will turn up.
