Car Plows Into Cell Phone Store
POSTED: 7:50 a.m. EST November 3, 2003
WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- An Abington, Mass., woman, driving and talking on her cell phone, died after her car plowed into a cell phone store in West Bridgewater.
Bethaney Lawton, 20, was not wearing a seat belt when her car crashed into a Cingular Wireless building shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, officer Thomas Richmond said.
"She was on a cell phone, talking to a friend," Richmond said. "She told her friend, 'I'm about to get into an accident.' ... The friend heard the crash, the phone went dead."
Lawton swerved to avoid a utility pole, crossed into the oncoming lane and crashed into the building, Richmond said.
The car was three-fourths into the building, and it took 20 minutes to free her from the wreckage, according to Fire Chief Leonard Hunt. She died while undergoing surgery at Boston Medical Center.
Police said Lawton was alone in her car after dropping off a friend in Bridgewater. She was studying to be an EMT at Massasoit Community College.

you'd think she couLd've put the fucking phone down to save her Life...
YonicSoothe is right -- if I was about to get into an accident, I'd throw the damn phone down and put both hands on the wheel. Why the fuck would she SAY, "I'm about to get into an accident"? That shows she had MORE than enough time to react to it and save her own life.
Did you hear about the guy on the train track? His car broke down he was walking down a hill talking on his cellphone and it turns out he was in the middle of the track. So the conductor blew the whistle to tell him he was in the way..
and he put his hand on his other ear to block out the whistle.
Sad. If she was an EMT she should have known about driving without your seatbelt on much less talking on the phone. It is illegal in NY to talk on cell and drive and i think that's a smart move. Anytime I have ever tried using the phone in the car, even the hands free kind, I can immediately measure the drop in concentration to driving. It's scary. It's weird cuz you could have a friends talking to you in the car and that wouldn't cause you to completely block out your surroundings...right? So what happens to people's senses when they are on the phone?

Somebody in the UK (at Cambridge, I think) did a little study showing that drivers' reaction time while talking on a mobile is roughly that of a legally drunk person. I'd dig up the link, but it seems like the anecdotal evidence is good enough. I tend to think that using a mobile while driving interrupts your concentration for two reaons- a. the person's voice is right in your ear, so it's difficult to ignore if you're in a tight spot. b. phone conversations normally require more concentration than face to face interaction because of the lack of visual cues.
oohhh, man, that reminds me of a simpsons where marge is cutting out funny headlines "peanutbutter truch crashes into jelly factory, this one's a winner"
