Nelson Mandela has taken the oppportunity of his 90th birthday to "add his voice to the growing international condemnation of the political violence in Zimbabwe".

I can't think of anyone else (apart from perhaps Thabo Mbeki) who might act as a genuine counterweight to Mugabe.

Nelson Mandela spoke few words but they will carry immense weight simply because of who he is, says our correspondent.

Mandela's condemnation follows increasing condemnation of the Zimbabwean election farce by other Southern African governments.

Few people can carry the kind of moral authority Mandela does, but I doubt even this will shame Mugabe.

We all know what Mugabe thinks of Mbeki.

Hell, he apparently doesn't give a fuck with SADC or the UN thinks. The elections need to be delayed indefinitely or until a coalition government can be agreed upon or at the absolute least when Tsvingari feels safe to come out of hiding. Let's just be VERY glad those arms never reached Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe rejects Mandela rebuke

A ruling Zanu-PF official described Mr Mandela's comments as unacceptable and unfortunate for a man of his stature.
...

Speaking to the BBC, the parliamentary chief whip for Zanu-PF said Mr Mandela's statement was "very unfortunate".

"I don't see the merit in that kind of statement... [It's] totally unacceptable... the judgement that he has made," Jerome MacDonald Gumbo said.

This goes from bad to worse.
