An alert reader wrote in just a little while ago to let us know about something he'd spotted on Fox News Wednesday afternoon. During a segment discussing conservative attacks against Michelle Obama, the wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama, the network described the former as "Obama's baby mama."

Fox is stepping up the racism I guess. Are they just trying to be clever because it rhymes with Obama or are they just being insensitive, racists pricks? You decide.

Noelle Hancock said in best at New York Magazine:

Fox News has possibly revealed itself to be sexist, racist, and out of touch, all at the same time!
...
First of all, a network shouldn't be allowed to have the word "News" in its title if it goes around saying things like "Obama's Baby Mama!" This isn't E!, guys. You'd never see Ryan Seacrest headlining a story about Lindsay Lohan's Sapphic relationship with Samantha Ronson with "Lindsay's Alliance With Member of the Female Persuasion Called Into Question, Pending Investigation."

At the risk of sounding like I'm making excuses for Fox, does anyone think maybe they're doing it for shock value and ratings? Knowing the ratings game is much more competitive due to many more channels and many more overall media outlets, perhaps they stay stuck on stupid in some futile attempt to get us talking and visit their website or view their station? I don't know. Any thoughts on that?

That is just so fucked up and ignorant.

Is there a petition or something we can all sign to get them off the fucking air?

This sounds like the right call. Perhaps a petition we can sign and turn in to the FCC or something? Is that effective? I'd like to think so.

If so, that only makes it worse.

I saw that too, but I couldn't seem to connect to the website from the email I got.

This is how a campaign should be run. No need for attack ads. Just refute the lies being told, run on a clean record and hold to campaign promises.

I've been saying for a while that the thing to really spice up this campaign is some Barack Obama baby mama drama. Looks like it's come true.

The first of many "gaffes" from Fox. They don't do a good job of hiding their contempt. In fact, the only thing Fox seems to be good at is riling people up.

To me it just sounds kind of Jenny Jones-ish. You know: trash TV. Quite fitting for Fox.

Interesting side note: I heard one political analyst on NPR predict that Obama will win because his name fits with the word "economics" so well. Reaganomics, Clintonomics...none of these compare with the verbal awesomeness of "Obamanomics."

Well, I for one am glad that Gloria Steinem has been so active in the past few months. Surely she shall rally the feminists of the nation round the standard and to the support of Michelle Obama.

What? Don't tell me her whiteness is showing.

This sarcasm aside, this I think is an important test of just what 2nd-wave feminism really stands for. I for one, though I'm not 2nd-wave by any means, have become increasingly sympathetic to their claims for fear of latent sexism in my own thinking. I especially got worried when my first response to:

Was "Well, they may have gotten the context wrong". Followed by the second thought: "Exactly what context would have made what was said in any way not sexism?" Capped by the third thought: "Okay, yeah, there is no justifying or contextualizing that".

This is an important opportunity to see whether movement feminism in fact is going through the same kinds of thinking about Obama . . . is there really a contextualizing of Geraldine Ferraro's contextualizations?

I don't like it either, but, um... First Amendment anybody?

Best way to kill Fox? Ignore them. And the next time somebody cites Fox News as a source when you're having a political discussion with them, laugh in their face.
