(CNN) -- Sen. Edward Kennedy was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital in Massachusetts Saturday morning, a well-informed, prominent Democratic source in that state told CNN.

The source said the 76-year-old senator had "symptoms of a stroke."

Kennedy was taken to the hospital around 8 or 9 a.m. from the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis, according to the source. The source said the senator would be transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

That hospital said it had no information on Kennedy.

Back to Kennedy's hospitalization ... CNN is reporting that Kennedy contacted some family members to cancel lunch plans, and also called the the doctor himself to report that he wasn't feeling well. The way they're playing it is that if he was able to make the calls himself in such a "businesslike manner", then it might not be as serious as feared.

They are now reporting that Kennedy had a seizure, not a stroke, and is resting comfortably.

CNN is quoting the family as saying they expect a "full recovery". Looks like it was a seizure and not a stroke. This would be good news. Well, for most of us, anyway.

I dunno, seizures in people that don't normally have them aren't really a sign of anything good I don't think. But I am not a doctor, so for all I know it could just be really bad gas or something.

It probably has more to do with being 76 and a long history of alcohol and rich food. It takes a toll.

But I sure as hell hope he gets better. Not just for his family, although that would be enough of a reason to hope he gets better. But also because he'll be needed in the Obama presidency.

They're still looking into what caused the seizure, but he's upbeat and alert.

Cool - mercifully not a stroke.

Seizures can be brought on by many things - even stress - but a stroke can be very hard to come back from.

More info

Doctors said that preliminary biopsy results showed a malignant glioma in the left parietal-lobe. It was detected after Sen. Kennedy, 76 years old, was airlifted to Boston on Saturday after having a seizure at his Cape Cod home.

The usual course of treatment includes combinations of radiation and chemotherapy, but the Massachusetts Democrat's treatment will be decided after more tests.

"He has had no further seizures, remains in good overall condition, and is up and walking around the hospital," said a joint statement issued by Lee Schwamm, vice chairman of the Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Larry Ronan, Sen. Kennedy's primary-care physician.

...

Yep, brain cancer. frown

Damage to the left parietal lobe can result in what is called "Gerstmann's Syndrome." It includes right-left confusion, difficulty with writing (agraphia) and difficulty with mathematics (acalculia). It can also produce disorders of language (aphasia) and the inability to perceive objects normally (agnosia).

Source.

Let's hope he has a swift and full recovery. I worry a bit about the whole "right-left" confusion thing...

Dr. John Golfinos, an associate professor of neurosurgery at the New York University Cancer Institute, said malignant glioma could be difficult to beat.

"Typically, the outlook is not that great for this disease," said Dr. Golfinos.

Dr. Golfinos said he could not speak about Senator Kennedy's case specifically, but in general, a patient's prognosis depends on a number of factors, including age and a general description known as performance status. He said there is no common screening test to discover the presence of such a tumor, and that for most people who develop one, no cause is ever identified.

Although a large number of promising treatments have been developed in recent years, Dr. Golfinos said the long-term survival rates have not improved greatly so far.

"It is still a difficult one, so the prognosis has not improved that much," he said.
