When you look at your budget, how much goes to insurance- and how much of that insurance is REQUIRED by the state you live, and drive in...I'd guess over 1/4 of my income goes towards it...and God help you if you ever use it...
I live in Des Moines IA, which seems to be a major center of operations for Insurance companies- you know who still has money? Those who work for Insurance Companies...you know who is still building new multi million dollar buildings...Take a guess...
And they say vampires are a myth....

Minimal car insurance is the only insurance I can afford. As soon as I paid off my car loan, I went to Liability only. I can't afford health, life, or even renter's. And won't for a long time.

So, all in all, I'm basically screwed for at least a few more years.

The only thing I disagree with on mandatory liability auto insurance is that if the State is going to do that and enforce it, the State should also be required to pick up the tab when someone without insurance clobbers your car.

Hmm, interesting idea. Most states just require that you carry uninsured motorist coverage. Seems to work fairly well.

But yes, insurance in general is ridiculous. The amount of premiums for every type of insurance that go toward administrative costs (read: huge bloated executive salaries) is vulgar.

Not to mention the fact that you're doing business with a company who, by it's very nature, needs to deny you the product (paid out claims) you pay for, whenever possible.

Some comedian said, "It's like gambling against yourself."

I'm so glad I live in Canada.

Now, we don't have it as good as France does.

But I can confidently say that, if I lived in the States, I'd probably be dead.

I spend 106 dollars a month on the most basic car insurance and renters insurance combined. My biggest expense is rent which is 625 a month tho I get to live in the heart of downtown Atlanta so it is worth it.

Insurance i still a ripoff however, and I am referring to health insurance more so than car.

IIRC in many if not all states under/uninsured motorist coverage only extends to the coverage you bought, meaning it does not cover property damage to your vehicle if you only have liability coverage yourself.

So, if some uninsured driver totals your car, your liability-only policy under/uninsured coverage won't pay for your damaged car.

Mine? About 5% of my budget goes on insurance. None of that is health insurance; it's all property and driver.

$800 per year for basic coverage on two cars. $1000 month rent for 50 year old 2/3. $146 PER WEEK for health insurance for a family of 4. This is before gas, food, clothes, ect, ect,....The first time I tried to use it for my son's ADD, they sent me a letter asking for prior conditions in the last year. Seeing as how he hasn't had insurance in over a year, and therefore under Florida law, could not have a pre-existing condition,(statute of limitations is 1 year in Florida), I promptly threw their shit in the garbage.

You guess? Don't you have a budget?

I sincerely doubt 25% of your income goes to insurance payments. Unless your income is ridiculously low or you lead the most danger-filled life imaginable.

Well I don't think he'd post a photo of someone else's Jeep in his profile pic. If his insurance runs at say SR22 rates (worst possible) and that's 25% of his income............What's that? $2500 a year for insurance? if that's 25% of his income, do the math. What's he doing with a Jeep making that kind of money?

Didn't mean to come across as a jerk, just to say there's only two imaginable ways his car insurance takes 25% of his income.

Or it could be that he is talking about all his different types of insurance: car, health, life, renters or homeowners, dental . . . and I haven't looked, but maybe he has kids he has to have insurance for.

Have you tried thinking?

All he mentioned was his car. I guess doctors pay that high a percentage in malpractice insurance. Perhaps something should be done about this situation.

Actually, he doesn't mention his car at all. Maybe Iowa requires more than just car insurance.

Live in and DRIVE in? Most states have mandatory car insurance, so that's what I assumed he was talking about.
