BBC article by John Zogby

To all intents and purposes the race for the Democratic nomination is over.

Where do we go from here? My understanding is that probably today, but certainly within 48 hours, about 30 super-delegates will endorse Mr Obama. That should give him further momentum.

You will also see pressure from party leaders and party elders on undecided super-delegates to come off the fence.

It is very important that some of that pressure comes from women, because Mrs Clinton has a devoted following among older women, who have a sense that this is the last chance in their lifetimes to elect a woman president, and the members of this demographic may not be keen on voting for Obama.

So it begins?

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Former Sen. George McGovern, who backed Hillary Rodham Clinton, is urging her to drop out of the Democratic presidential race.

McGovern said Wednesday he has decided to endorse Barack Obama.

After watching the returns from the North Carolina and Indiana primaries Tuesday night, McGovern says it's virtually impossible for Clinton to win the nomination.

McGovern says he is calling former President Clinton to tell him of the decision and adds that he remains close friends with the Clintons.

I like how McGovern tells the press before he tells the Clintons. But that's got to hurt a little, one of her backers changing his mind like that.

Clinton lends herself another $6.5 million.

Guess her fundraising skills aren't up to the challenge. Maybe she's being outspent by Obama in every state because she can't afford to keep up.

Good riddance to her. I hope she does bow out, I wouldn't say it would be graceful considering how long she's stayed in, but I'd give her an ounce of credit for finally leaving now. I would not be surprised if she tried to keep fighting tho, as much as I think she's a neo-con, she might stay in just to damage Obama as much as she can.

ZOMG... she is truly a desperate woman.

I wonder if she might stay in with very limited activities just long enough to raise the $11M+ the campaign now owes her. Then she could pay herself back and drop.

She Can't Let Go
06 May 2008 11:02 pm

As her speech staggers on, after the gas tax holiday gambit, and a plea for Burma, she eventually turns to Florida and Michigan. You almost want to look away. But it's fascinating in a way. She cannot concede; she cannot give an inch; she cannot acknowledge reality. Observing sociopaths in close detail as their world collapses around them and they cannot absorb the truth is always fascinating. And yet some sliver of humanity is discernible: her tone is altered. Even she cannot fake enthusiasm or confidence any more. And Bill seems grim. Chelsea seemed close to breaking into tears.

If you want another president whose own grip on reality has little relationship to the outside world, then you know who to vote for.

This:

Today, in the wake of the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, the Obama campaign is announcing three new superdelegates: Jerry Meek, chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party, Jeanette Council, a member of the D.N.C. from North Carolina and Inola Henry, a member of the D.N.C. from California.

wow. she's on the ropes taking uppercuts now.

Does anyone think that she will actually realize that mathematically the race is over?

Does anyone think that Obama will actually speak to her about being Vice President? I've read rumors about it, but i just don't know what to believe.

No. I think she's completely delusional, power-hungry, and will go kicking and screaming all the way to the convention.

Dear God, I hope not.

You can add a 4th to that total.

Oh, and her Congressional support is bailing:

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), one of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-N.Y.) most prominent Senate supporters, said Wednesday that she will ask the former first lady to detail her plans for the rest of the Democratic primary.

"I, as you know, have great fondness and great respect for Sen. Clinton and I'm very loyal to her," Feinstein said. "Having said that, I'd like to talk with her and [get] her view on the rest of the race and what the strategy is."

Clinton, who eked out a win in Indiana Tuesday night but lost big to front-runner Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) in North Carolina, has not responded to Feinstein's phone call, the California senator said.

"I think the race is reaching the point now where there are negative dividends from it, in terms of strife within the party," Feinstein said. "I think we need to prevent that as much as we can."

One of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-N.Y.) congressional backers on Wednesday added to the mounting pressure on the former first lady to consider dropping her bid to become president.

Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Mich.) told The Hill that Clinton should reassess her prospects after losing to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) by 14 points in North Carolina and edging her rival in Indiana in Tuesday's primaries.

"I urge her to take the day off and think very seriously about doing what's best for the country and best for the party," said Kildee.

"I got straight A's in math," added Kildee, implying that Obama's delegate lead would be impossible to overcome in the few primaries left on the Democratic calendar.

Yes. I believe she won't want to back to the Senate because she won't be in charge of the place.

I think she will extort Obama and ask for the VP slot in exchange for dropping out now.

No. Those rumors are coming from people who are unfamiliar with Clinton, Obama, the race, and history in general. This sort of thing is proposed almost every four years, especially when a candidate starts to falter, and is rooted in wishful thinking on the part of the losing candidate's supporters.

He will probably pick a popular progressive governor from a swing state, or a Democratic Senator with a long history of experience in Congress.
