UNITED NATIONS, April 9 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on Wednesday for calm in Haiti where demonstrators took to the streets of capital Port-au-Prince Tuesday and stormed the presidential palace to protest against soaring food prices.

Also, apparently there are some school kids from MA that are trapped there. Don't feel bad though, they're missionaries.

Yeah, they were terrible people and all, but they got shit done. The threat of a voodoo hex got folks to straighten up and fly right.

Haitians have introduced new expressions to describe how expensive life has become here. The Creole phrase ''Aba lavi chè'' -- Down with the expensiveness -- is scribbled in red throughout the city.

Haitians also describe the burning sensation in their empty stomachs as if they had swallowed ''acide batterie'' -- battery acid -- or ''klowox'' -- Clorox.

While Haitian and international officials have stressed the need to create jobs, few have been created in recent years. The majority of the population is unemployed. Even those who have traditionally made it by working in Haiti's informal economy say it is becoming increasingly difficult to make ends meet.

Not good.

Since there is a needless global food shortage, and the problems in Haiti are part of it, I thought I'd link to tonight's Bill Moyers Journal, which talks about farm subsidies, and the reasons investor-farmers are paid huge amounts to not use their land.
