For some time now, Hillary Clinton has been touting the story of an uninsured pregnant woman who lost her baby and died herself after being denied care by an Ohio hospital because she could not come up with a $100 fee.

But there's one problem. It's not true.

As reported in The New York Times,

But hospital administrators said Friday that Ms. Bachtel was under the care of an obstetrics practice affiliated with the hospital, that she was never refused treatment and that she was, in fact, insured.

Oops.

To be fair, she didn't make it up. She heard the story from a sheriff's deputy. But shouldn't someone in her campaign organization be verifying these stories? There could well be similar stories somewhere that are true.

Linda M. Weiss, a spokeswoman for the not-for-profit hospital, said the Clinton campaign had never contacted the hospital to check the accuracy of the story, which Mrs. Clinton had first heard from a Meigs County, Ohio, sheriff's deputy in late February.

Maybe they were too busy negotiating trade deals.

The wheels seem to be coming off the Clinton campaign. Her organization has been in turmoil since Super Tuesday. At this point the notion that she has a better chance of winning in November seems like a real stretch.

Please don't call Senator Clinton a witch. We don't even know if she is pagan or not.

You missed the best part from the story!

The sheriff's deputy, Bryan Holman, had played host to Mrs. Clinton in his home before the Ohio primary. Deputy Holman said in a telephone interview that a conversation about health care led him to relate the story of Ms. Bachtel. He never mentioned the name of the hospital that supposedly turned her away because he did not know it, he said.

emphasis added. The campaign must have only performed part of their due diligence.

The organization she has assembled/disassembled for her campaign doesn't inspire a great deal of confidence that a Clinton presidency would be vastly different. Hoe many Cabinet members, or advisors, or chiefs of staff will say stupid shit and get fired??

It's like Clinton doesn't understand the sort of scrutiny she's subject to as a (supposed) contender in a heated race or, more importantly, that the internet has made fact checking so easy that you literally cannot make up stories without expecting someone to investigate the validity of your claims.

My immediate reaction to this thread is to wonder how HIPAA enters into this. I'd be phenomenally surprised to hear that HIPAA doesn't prohibit random politicos from calling up hospitals and being granted personal health information on their patients. I'd absolutely flip shit if that happened to me; I'd sue everyone I could think of if my hospital gave Hillary Clinton or any other national political figure my personal health information (to use for a sob story, no less) without my consent.

Yes, but the woman in question died; so she can't sue wink
