I don't know if anyone knows about this story in the USA but it's been all over the news in the UK:

SKY NEWS:

Sophie Lancaster and her 21-year-old boyfriend, who were both Goths, were beaten up in a vicious assault in Stubbylee Park, Bacup.

She died in hospital nearly two weeks after the assault in the early hours of August 11 last year.

The boy, who cannot be named because of his age, admitted murdering her and causing grievous bodily harm to her lover Robert Maltby.

No one should ever be at risk because of they way they dress or want to appear
I just wanted to say I think she was beautiful and I hope the revolting people that did this to her go down for a long long time

My love goes to her family

I read in the Metro that the parents of the boy who did it laughed when they heard what he'd done.

I really don't understand some people.

It's absolutely disgusting that this happened.
The kids who did it, KIDS, 15 and 16 year olds... I have no words. It's just so awful.

BBC article.

The way I read it they weren't laughing about it in court, they were laughing about it when the police were investigating the incident. When the police questioned Brendan Harris and his mother both of them were apparently laughing and joking and generally not taking the matter seriously. Now that he has been found guilty I hope that he will take the matter much more seriously but I very much doubt it.

It greatly saddened me to read about this incident. Killing someone because they are a goth seems to me to be comparable to killing someone because of their religion, nationality or race or even because of which football club they support. It wouldn't surprise me if the killers had previously committed racially motivated assaults. This kind of behaviour seems to be part and parcel of the mentality which says that people who don't belong to 'my tribe' must be treated with hostility. The fact that someone can be beaten to death on account of their dress sense is indicative of the way that some people seem to see violence as a legitimate way of spicing up an otherwise monotonous evening. The victims' dress sense seems to me to be a mere excuse for the violence and not the root motivation.
