New York Governor David Paterson today admitted to having had extramarital affairs during a rocky period in his marriage.

In what appears to be an expedient political maneuver, Paterson directly addressed reports that he had had affairs, garnering amicable responses from both Joe Bruno, head of the Republican-dominated State Senate, and Sheldon Silver, leader of the Democrat-dominated State Assembly.

"His personal life is his personal life and he has to share what he's comfortable sharing," Mr. Bruno told reporters this morning. "And as long as it doesn't interfere with how he's governing, its nobody's business. David is able to handle himself. He's always been a good friend and handled himself properly, and I expect he will continue to handle himself properly."

Sheldon Silver, the speaker of the State Assembly, said he admired Mr. Paterson's courage in admitting the infidelity and suggested that the couple's past problems, which he called "a nice story," could serve as an inspiration to other couples who find their marriages imperiled.

Both Paterson and his wife admitted to having affairs, and said they have ceased.

Mr. Paterson said that he and his wife had sought counseling and had since resolved their marital problems. "Actually," he said, "I think we have a marriage like many Americans, maybe even like many of you."

Exactly. I, for one, welcome our new human overlords. I find the fact that the press and Albany are so excited about this the newsworthy issue. This shit happens. It gets resolved. Divorce happens. Whatever. Elected officials are human too. It seems as though the press is excited about this mostly because it's somehow in some way kind of like Spitzer paying for a high-priced prostitute. Except it's really not.

So why's the press so excited?

I cheated once. Effective today, I'm stepping down from my position as potential future politician. I am deeply ashamed for what I have done.

I can earn millions of dollars of sleazy money and make questionable military decisions that costs thousands of lives but I can't have extra-marital sex, I know that...even if she was doing it too. And yet I've done it.

I messed up. I'm sorry, America.

But you admitted it. So now we can elect you.

So long as you're prepared to have your past life examined in minute detail, by people who want to crucify you because it'll sell newspapers.

For Democrats, adultery is a badge of honor but wanting to win a war is the ultimate stigma.

Wow. Way to associate two things that have nothing to do with each other and aren't a part of reality. Be proud.

Does it hurt to be this sad of a stereotype every day? It's really pathetic to watch.

Are they adding Viagra as well as Fluoride to the water in NY/NJ?

I think the only weird part of all of this is that the politicians have to make this public (besides Spitzer who broke the law). Of course in North Carolina, you can be sued for alienation of affection. Hell, adultery could even be still on the books.

For republicans, anonymous gay bathroom sex is the best, but being fiscally responsible in a time of war is the worst.

Dude, you guys have had five years. You know, longer than WWI, WWII, Korea, the Spanish American War, the War of 1812, The Civil War, the Mexican American War, and the first Gulf War.

I think it might be time to concede that we're not winning.

Winning? It's a war we'll never win, can't win, and can never end unless we stop on our own.

Fixed.

I have a funny feeling that that sort of attitude might have been part of the problem in the first place.
