Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.

Mr. Spitzer, who was huddled with his top aides early this afternoon, had hours earlier abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day. He is set to make an announcement about 2:15 this afternoon at his Manhattan office.

Undoubtedly. He was a rising star. He really shot himself in the foot on this one.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I had high hopes for the guy, following his relentless dogging of corporate injustice. What an idiot.

At least he could own up to his mistakes, something which seems to be lacking in many elected officials.

You have to be squeaky clean if you plan on taking on Wall Street.

*Slaps his forehead*

How could he be so STUPID?

Granted, I'm not really surprised- it feels as if politicians need to have sex scandals as a prerequisite to running for office -but Spitzer decided to go tom-catting while the NY GOP was still steaming over "Trooper-Gate"?

"The office of State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno has made no official statement at this time, but the Senator will issue a press release 'As soon as he stops doing the Snoopy-Dance.'"

*Sigh*

Grover Cleveland did father a kid while NY Governor, but he was one of many men who visited the mother -being the only bachelor of that group, he took the blame to avoid further exposure and humiliation.

But those were different circumstances and a different era- Spitzer may not survive this.

It's to suggest that their wives still love them/ they're still devoted to "Family Values", whatever that means.

Remember when Jim McGreevey Came out? There's only Fifty Governors- when one makes an ass of himself on TV, everyone gets to see it. I don't know why- I guess now everyone can see what became of a possible 2012/2016 Democratic Presidential Candidate.

If he resigns, NY would have its first African American governor in David Patterson.

Also, Spitzer was a superdelegate for Clinton. Would Patterson be seated as a superdelegate in his place if he resigned before the convention? I speak of resignation because he could be charged under the Mann Act. The wiretaps are embarrassing if nothing else. There are details that were missed in other scandals. Money figures, procedures, and even a critique of the session.

(Bolded emphasis mine)

Wait, what? He gives notes to the two-grand/hour escort? That's pretty rich. Seems like she has the routine pretty well figured out if you ask me.

Back to the important traction on the issue: It will be interesting if the media shark frenzy latches onto or flatly ignores Spitzer's superdelegate status, and for whom he is pledged.

I can't believe he hasn't checked into rehab for his "alcohol problem" yet. This thing broke today, what's he waiting for?

He's a politician- alcohol is a social and creative lubricant for their kind. Anyone could see through that.

I would assume so. I'm guessing the supedelegate vote is for the person holding the office, not the man himself. The blind Lt. Governor will take over and, I believe, will get his superdelegate vote.

It's a shame that he can't see the difference between white and black.

So, Clinton may potentially lose another SD through this?

I've never heard of this guy before today (I don't make it a practice to know the gov't officials of other states too often), so I don't know if that is a good trade-off or not.

It would appear so, but that's based on very vague initial information.

Bwa ha ha ha

Though his signature issue was pursuing Wall Street misdeeds, as attorney general Mr. Spitzer also had prosecuted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state's organized crime task force.

In one such case in 2004, Mr. Spitzer spoke with revulsion and anger after announcing the arrest of 16 people for operating a high-end prostitution ring out of Staten Island.

"This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure," Mr. Spitzer said at the time. "It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring."

Typical.
