Didn't Firefox develop from the minds of Netscape developers? Thought I read a blurb that they started Mozilla after the AOL take over or went over to Mozilla after the buyout.

Yeah, it uses the same rendering engine as Netscape did: Gecko. If I remember things correctly, they started Firefox at Netscape but AOL ditched it, whereupon the boys and girls founded Mozilla and took Firefox open-source.

I vaguely remember Netscape from 10 years ago. It is always sad when you lose an alternative to IE. Then again, I use Safari so no worries there.

So long to Netscape.

Netscape was great back when I was in high-school, but after about version 3 or 4 it started sucking rather dramatically compared to more polished alternatives (which eventually included Internet Explorer, to my horror.). This really just marks the culmination of a very lengthy dying.

i remember when Dotto on Data was talking about how great Mosaic was -- i think that was right before he started making the Cruisin' the Internet series. gooood times.

and really, Netscape's time was up long, long ago. 4.17 was one of the worst browsers ever made.

I remember when IE and Netscape were the Big Two, and I'd spend fucking hours writing poor HTML and JavaScript in order to compensate for the two browser's inability to render identical code in any way that looked the same.

OH GOD. Remember the days of IE-only and NS-only sites? JavaScript browser detect and redirect, FTW!

I just read the "New New Thing." It had a lot to do with Netscape and it's creator. I never really knew the history. It's pretty damn interesting. And RIP Netscape.

Netscape was my first Web Dev tool ... and was free... and few people knew about the HTML editing tool embed on Netscape.

Anyway, I never understood who was who (Mozilla, Netscape, Terminal, Firefox)... I get lost with so many changes. If I wanted a new browser I just go to www.mozilla.com. That is now and 10 years ago.

RIP Netscape. Much nostalgia there.

But yeah, haven't been using it for years because of it's downturn. Firefox has been my preference for a long while.

You forgot <img src="img/dancingmacaroninoodle.gif"> in there somewhere. There needs to be a swooshing e-mail icon, too. You can't have a Netscape 4.x era website without animated .gifs.
