This is fresh off the news, so developments will be forthcoming

(12-27) 05:34 PST RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (AP) --

Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide bombing that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, a party aide and a military official said.

"At 6:16 p.m. she expired," said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto's party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital where she was taken after the attack.

A senior military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment, confirmed that Bhutto had died.

Her supporters at the hospital began chanting "Dog, Musharraf, dog," referring to Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf. Some of them smashed the glass door at the main entrance of the emergency unit, others burst into tears.

Thanks for the quick heads up on this. Bad news indeed for the region, whatever you may have thought of her.

That is awful but not entirely surprising. I feel bad for the people that were putting faith on Bhutto to bring some needed change to Pakistan and, of course, for her family.

During this whole thing, where she returned from exile, and then Musharraf declared emergency rule, I really felt like the course she was taking -- challenging a ruthless military dictator and the radical islamists at the same time -- was practically suicidal. I'm sad that my hunch was correct.

That said, I've never been entirely convinced that she would actually have been much of a positive change. Sure, better than Musharraf, but hardly uncorrupted.

Well, maybe that whole "martyr" thing will now come back and bite them in the ass.

I'm not holding too much hope for that, though, and this is certainly not good news at all.

At the worst possible time, too. Just when things seemed to be normalizing and there was hope for peaceful transfer of power.

Just terrible.

Not sure where you get that, it was never going to happen.

I hope everyone is paying attention to the comments by our president and candidates like Rudy Giuliani.

They are blaming this on "religious extremists." Right. Don't look at the dictator we have given 10 billion dollars to.

Her blood is on our hands.

at first i was shocked. but, with a few hours to think about it, i'm not. i wouldn't be surprised if Musharraf's people were behind it.
if not now, i don't know when, or if, the Pakistani people will ever rise up from this oppresiive rule and take back their country to a true democratic state.
there is just so much corruption in our world today. it makes me sad, angry, and afraid.

Well, I was getting that from the (admittedly naive) hope engendered by Musharraf's pledge to have open elections, take off his uniform, etc. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't going to add Pakistan to my list of top vacation destinations anytime soon, but things had been getting better over the past few weeks. Or at least not getting markedly worse, which is at least something.

Its terrible news and will probably make the region even more unstable.

Is Musharraf going to use this as a reason to stay in power long, probably.

Saw this on the news when I woke up this morning. "This is terrible" doesn't even begin to describe how I feel about this. I had been following the events in Pakistan on NPR, and admired her courage.

Hopefully, the People's Party becomes even more unified and continues their work.

EDIT: And this was the first time I watched TV news in a long time.
