WASHINGTON (AFP) _ The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday.

"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference.

Interesting.

I whole heartedly support the Lakota and other tribes' right to independent states, I don't see this movement being respected by the US government in any meaningful way in my lifetime.

It's awfully insensitive of me, but the first thing I thought of when I saw this was Shadowrun.

It's also horribly geeky.

I also don't have confidence in its capacity for success.

Good for them. Hopefully the day will come when all the tribes of America have done this and are once again independent.
