Yup, the good old Farnsworth Fusor. There are a number of them kicking around -- DaimlerChrysler Aerospace was even marketing one as a portable neutron source for a while. Still, damn impressive for a kid that young.

Don't judge the experiment by the bullshite spouted by some know-nothing newspaper twit. No-one invented plasma, and it was first described as a separate state of matter at the end of the 19th century. The fusor was an idea original to Farnsworth, and it grew directly out of his extensive work with plasmas and vacuum tubes while he was inventing television.

Farnsworth's fusor is an interesting idea, and it has led to at least one commercial product that I know of, as I mentioned earlier. Last I heard, Dr. Bussard (as in Bussard ramjet) was working on it full time. There is a guy at UIUC (IIRC, Dr. George Miller) who designed the DaimlerChrysler device and has done some work on using the fusor geometry for an anti-proton catalyzed fusion rocket.

Dig a bit deeper before shooting your mouth next time, mmkay?
