Oddly unprogressive for L.A.
I'd have expected a legalization of prostitution and formation of a regulatory agency. The Dutch have it right, if public health is a true concern.

I must ask, on what grounds? They're saying that strip clubs contribute to drugs and violence, so did they argue that it wasn't because the council has personal moral issues with strip clubs but because they are fighting drugs and violence. If they aren't doing this to curb drugs (which I think we we all could use more of, seriously) then why'd they make the law exactly? I guess most, if not all, stupid laws could be argued throught the same means and come to nothing because of the way poeple are.

So what happens to all the women who depend on lapdancing to earn a living? What are they supposed to do - start selling insurance?

I'm sure there are girls here who could say just how violent someone could be, and what might happen when they try to leave after work...

If it keeps the dancers safer, ie no possibility of physical contact with the client, then that is good. Banning private rooms... again, if it keeps dancers safer, then good. If it's about restricting the acts themselves, ie less nudity, then that's just stupid.

its slightly hypocritical considering the streets are littered with LA WEEKLYs that offer all kinds of services. anyone can pick those up, whereas you have to be 18 to enter a strip club.

this doesnt mean there wont be lap dances, it just means they will be wasting more money on vice giving out tickets and fines.

it's stupid no matter how you look at it. the effect of this will be to push more strippers into prostitution. if you can't make your money selling lapdances, then given the choice between making less (or no) money or going somewhere in private where the government can't see you and selling your body for sex, prostitution starts to look like a better option.

if it's actually about keeping strippers safe, then perhaps the city should have asked them what they wanted. it's not hard to do.

I agree - it is going to turn more girls into "escorts" in an unsafe enviornment to make the same money they were getting for lap dances where it was more controlled and safer.........this will just cause more trouble...

This law is NOT designed to keep anybody safe. It is billed as a means of stopping prostitution, which the backers of this law claim is related to lap dances. The concept is that the John gets all sexed up by the physical contact and then either offers or agrees to pay additional money for other services from the "dancer."

Supposedly, there have been numerous complaints from residents living near strip clubs who assert that sexual activity is conducted in cars and on lawns and in alleys near their homes. I find these allegations highly questionable and it seems much more likely this is just a law introduced by a couple of uptight female city councilmembers who are pushing a grandstanding moral agenda.

Incidentally, this law only applies within the boundaries of the City of Los Angeles, not within the much larger County of Los Angeles.

If that's the case, why not just target brothels and 'street-walkers' rather than lapdancers? Surely that's where the real problem lies... Of the dancers I know, I'd bet any amount of money that they would not have sex with a client. This sounds to me like they're caving in to complaints, and going after the wrong people.

I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if some Vegas comity lobbied for this. It sounds paranoid but it'd be really good for their business and politics really works this way.

You sound very knowledgable about our political system. Perhaps you should run for governor.

that's really shitty news. very very lame.

well la county is actually not very forward with the times, well especially in the adult industry. it is very difficult to sell hardcore porn there. well for the people i work with. the law is pretty strict in that area.

so lame....why does sex have to be illegal and wrong in the eyes of the lord?

Yup dude, that'll be it. It costs a lot less money for the council to just ban lapdancing than it does to pay more vice officers to bust brothels.
