For those who I have seen on boards such as this one or heard walking around in real life saying that they WGA can't possibly win this, I don't understand your logic. There's no way they can't possibly lose this, unless they are huge pussies like the democrats in congress have been lately and just back down on everything, What are the studios going to do when all the content just isn't there anymore? Already there has been talk of networks losing some of their largest rated shows permanently. The studios don't really have a choice but to concede to the guild and that's a great thing. Finally a struggle where the little guy who actually does the work can win. I hope you guys win soon so I can watch new episode of some of my favorite shows again, but don't back down for anything. It's only a matter of time before they realize they are painted into a corner on this one.

WTF?! a good show... are you high?! Bionic Woman was at best a pathetic atempt at a swiss cheese story. I have seen less plot holes in cheap porn, admitedly I only watched one and 1/2 episodes but, I don't think I have ever seen anyone go from freaking out about getting body jacked to totaly fine with it in such a short period of time (not to mention how quickly she figured out how to use the implants/replacement parts).

But back to the issue at hand.

So maybe the analogy of the retail SM wasn't top notch, but you get the point. My family owns a graphic design firm, we don't get residuals every time a logo we designed gets slapped on an ad, we get paid if we design the ad, but not if they slap it on there. Why? Because someone bought the logo, much like they are buying your script. We could hold our work for ransom and require that anytime they want to get a file from us, that they have already paid for us to create, they have to pay us again just to use it. Funny but I think FTR would probably throw us an Asshole Fuckface award for that. Please tell me I'm wrong, someone try to justify that. If we forced our clients to pay royalties every time they used a logo we designed, they would be broke, every last one of them. Sometimes, things like that just don't work.

I hope you all find that a better example, and for those that don't well please enlighten me as to why. I am substituting 1 piece of creative for another, each with the same general purpose, as a tool to help generate money for the individual or organization purchasing the creative. For the vast majority of companies, the graphics used are integral to thier marketing campaigns which in turn generate sales which in turn generate money. We provide ourselves with health benefits and life insurance. We get by just fine, would it help our bottom line to force people to pay per use, sure, would it be ethical, that is a bit of a grey area to me.

Once again, I have not said I disagree with what the WGA is doing, I do think that there were probably things that could have been done in the interem(sp) that could have helped to shorten the conflict, but since people on this board seem more interested in commenting on my run-on sentences, than reading what I wrote, I will avoid going into them so all you writers can stop cringing when I use a comma in place of a period because well frankly, on a forum to me it simply does not matter. At least for the most part I keep an eye on my spelling and you can read what I said without having to rebuild the sentence(s).

P.S. I agree that I would love to see the strike end, mainly because I like my shows like Journeyman, Heroes (this season seemed unreasonably short to me), Flash Gordon (campy yes, but fun), Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica (so sad this is the last season), Chuck, and others.

Also if and when this strike is over I would love to see the old British series "The Prisoner" ressurected, such a great concep and the things that could be done with the technology we have today would be AMAZING!!!! Just a thought but if you haven't seen it, please, do yourself a favor and watch it, worth every minute. So please once the strike ends, remake (just put more effort into it than Bionic Woman please)

my posts are not about whats right or whats just, who should get paid for what and how much, its about reality, and getting other pespectives on something that actualy effects more than my evening entertainment.

WGA has a huge fight ahead of them, against giant corparations. Its not gona be fair, its gona be lawyers and accountants trying to pay them as little as possible.

as a tv owner who lacks not only cable but a functioning antenna i support the wga. but screw the other guys cuz perfect hair forever was just getting good it got airtech-ed and screw us because you are underpaid (for the most part) and need to get fair compensation for the work that you do. just because i deliver pizzas doesn't mean it's ok for you to make money on your intellectual property in the future.

The writers of such "good shows" as "Bionic Woman" were getting screwed out of residuals for the use of their show, including the future DVD and Internet sales, decided to do something about it, so that they can afford to live to write more episodes, so YOU can watch it. Do you get it yet? Here's a step-by-step instruction for you (read it slowly):

1)Writer pitches one highly successful show to a studio
2)Studio pays writer for using that show in any format, so that:
3)a)Writer can afford his/her home and pay bills
b)Writer can buy food and therefore
c)Writer can keep on writing for highly successful show
4)Then, show keeps happening, so
5)You can keep watching it, oblivious to the fact that the show isn't created by mindless automatons. See that wasn't so hard.

Uh, no they're not. The average writer is middle class, at best. Haven't you been paying attention? What? You're too busy watching "Bionic Woman" to pay attention? Oh, I see, I'll excuse the fact that you have no clue.

So, I read that Leno & Conan are going to start up their shows again in Jan. As WGA members, they will cross their own guild's picket lines but claim that they will not participate in the writing process. (Not a huge surprise from these two network soda pop salesmen.)

Mr. Letterman, on the hand, is in side negotiations with the WGA in order to get his show re-started. A bit easier for him as he owns his own show & that Scottish show (ok Ferguson isn't exactly MacBeth) via World Wide Pants.
His side dealing could be weighed in a couple of ways. Some may see it as undermining the "brother/sisterhood" of the Guild. An example of exception within the community.
We might also read this as a picking away at the AMPTP ivory tower. The Guild will most likely begin pursuing this as a divide & conquer tactic. As the late night shows were the first to go, it's logical that they would be the first to return. It's almost a purely financial reasoning. These shows represent an important money making source for the networks. The are the "pork bellies" & "oil standard" of the network world. This is why their shut down told us that the strike was really on.

If we look at the potential arc of this strike, this new development should offer some hope. In many ways it is the end game of, at least, the first battle. It means that both sides have had to compromise. This may not be the picture they are directly presenting through their PR machines but it is obviously going on amongst the fiefdoms in the kingdom of broadcast media.

Fingers crossed folks. Perhaps for a moment, our artist kin can back off the emotional, responsive, stickin' it to da man contextualization & realize that their work is invaluable. Face it friends. No matter how hard we have to work sometimes for little to nothing, we get paid to do what we love & have the time of our lives making some of the most beautiful / ugly objects in the world.

And maybe the studio/corporations will quit it with the douchebaggery and realize that it's time for the formula to be revised so that everyone can keep making money. Get with it boys. You like the huge piles of cash & that warm fuzzy feeling / cache you get from hanging out with artists.

In the end this is all just business my friends. We are allowed to paint whatever picture we want of ourselves in our own heads. But for fuck's sake... let's quit with the posturing & get on with it. Try feeding yourself or paying the bills with your ego sometime & tell me how it works out for you.
