NOV 18, 2007 01:24 AM

George Bush has proven over and over that he is going to do whatever the fuck he wants. One of the most glaring examples is his many recess appointments which he has greatly perfected over the years, allowing legions of unqualified morons to fill important positions in our government. His first big recess appointment was John Bolton in August 2005 to the position of ambassador to the United Nations. Bolton, of course, turned out to be the shitty ambassador that anyone with a brain knew he would be.

So, this Thanksgiving holiday Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is going to keep the Senate in session to stop Bush from making any recess appointments.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has decided to keep the chamber in session over the Thanksgiving break to block President Bush from making any unsavory recess appointments while Senators are out of town.

Reid will keep the Senate in session by scheduling nonvoting sessions, which means some poor bastard is going to have to show up over the break. Reid explained that Bush refuses to bargain and just waits for a recess to make appointments. Bush also refuses to consider Democratic picks for several appointments.

“With the Thanksgiving break looming, the administration informed me that they would make several recess appointments,” Reid said. “I indicated I would be willing to confirm various appointments if the administration would agree to move on Democratic appointments.

“They would not make that commitment.”

The most disturbing pick who wasn’t gotten past the Senate is James Holsinger for surgeon general. Holsinger spent years in Kentucky trying to fix gay people and Bush wants to reward his creepy beliefs by making him the leading spokesmen for the government of matters of public health.

We see that as an issue not of orientation but of lifestyle. We have people who seek to walk out of that lifestyle.

Yeah, we should probably stop that guy, considering he lives in the year 1800. Bush let Reid know he would be appointing some nominees that the Democrats called, “Unacceptable.”

They did float a number of recess appointments. Some of them were very problematic.

So, this is what we have come to. The US has a president who just doesn’t want to play like an adult and the opposition party has to go to ridiculous lengths to stop him from doing whatever he wants. But there is one more thing that could happen here: What if Bush claims he is appointing them anyway? It would fit right in with his abuse of power pattern and I would not put it past him. Could be kind of fun, in a “What the fuck is happening?” kind of way.

Glad at least one Democrat has the balls to pull an unpopular move like this in order to stand in Bush's way on his march to hegemony.

Fuckin'-A...can't he just do a MArty McFly and go, "What the hell is that!" and appoint someone while the senate turns to see?

Either that or he could slip ex-lax in the water glass of all the Senators and appoint someone while they are waiting in line for the restroom.

Either one seems probable.

And honestly, if I were a Senator I'd have no problem skipping thanksgiving to stick it to the man. I'd view it as my responsibility as an elected official.

While I'm glad the senate is doing this to keep Bush somewhat in check, I'm saddened that this needs to be done at all.

Not with me.

I'm glad Reid finally found a spine somewhere.

I still have a hard time with comprehending how it happened that the most powerful nation in the history of the world fell into the hands of a gang of mental four-year olds, though.

I never understood the long terms given to recess appointments. They should either require that a demonstration of necessity is made (i.e. that for whatever reason the position MUST be filled in this time periods), and that the Senate has the right to remove the appointment when they return if they feel so inclined. Why give them a whole free year or two or whatever the hell it is? They should just change that law/rule/whatever.

I have nothing else to add at this moment (time constraints here) except that I was hoping something about Bush would be posted before Thanksgiving (thank you) just so I could post this. It's mostly irrelevant.

The whole system is a joke, I cant quite remember where it was said or written, but it was, "If you aren't a Clinton or a Bush than you are worthy to RULE, this country as of late." Thats just...Wow... I really dont have much faith in either side at the moment(or the fact that we have sides, we are all american right? or is that left??). Maybe the Constitution should have read, " We The Partisan Politicians."

Yeah, totally. Lying about getting a blowjob in the oval office is exactly the same as lying about having evidence of harboring terrorists, WMDs, and starting a war. Those fuckers don't stop to think of things like the thousands of soldiers and tens of thousands of civilians who will be killed or the cleaning bill for some dumb intern's dress.

Abuse of power! Abuse of power!

Brilliant.

Yeah, I'm also glad that the worst thing about the Clinton presidency was the blowjob... (at least, perjuring himself about it)

Rather than Waco, NAFTA, dropping bombs on Iraq, Sudan, and Colombia, supporting Turkish ethnic cleansing against Kurds, attacking Serbia without the consent of the UN, supporting the Suharto regime in Indonesia, and shitting on the American working class.

Bush probably will appoint people regardless of what the Senate says, then they will move to impeach him, he'll claim martial law and become dictator...its succinctly sweet and simple.....ok, so maybe beyond his grasp then.

Looks like the door is closed for Bush Regime recess appointments for the remainder of the term.

...Democrats appear dead set against allowing any more recess appointees, who would serve until the end of the next Congressional session, that is, essentially through the end of Mr. Bush's term. So unless there is an agreement between the White House and Democrats, it appears likely the Senate will not be in formal recess any time through 2008.

Jim Webb had to drive his ass up from Virginia to open a Senate session just to shut the Senate back down again.

No legislation can pass at pro forma sessions, but they allow the Senate to fulfill its constitutional requirement that, when not in recess, it meet on the day following three consecutive days off. Tuesday%u2019s session was such a rush job that the traditional opening prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance were dispensed with. Mr. Webb was the only senator in the chamber, and even the otherwise ever-present teenage pages were absent, having been sent home for Thanksgiving.

"It is not very fun going through the traffic," he said, "but I don't mind. I think this is important", [said Webb].

Well good... damn it.

Jesus fucking Christ....

being an exceptionally accomplished cynic it takes a hell of a lot to rattle me.
can we have election day early? get this fucking worthless redneck fucking puke out of office sooner? I'd bet that if somebody made that douche eat lead the country would fucking celebrate. have the reverse effect on American morale that 9-11 had.

we just need to napalm all of D.C. on a really busy day and start manning our political ranks from square one with people that care more about the people than themselves and know tolerance and compassion verses ignorance and arrogance.

Why vote if you know your in a state that will automatically go red or blue there is no point as your vote won't count....... To get the vote for president to really matter you need to change up the electoral college and thats not going to happen any time soon.

He says he's leftist. And his complaints against Clinton aren't necessarily inaccurate (though the one about Serbia is kind of problematic - I mean, I opposed the NATO action there, myself, but only because I thought it came too late and would do too little - the latter of which I was pleased to have been wrong about; but major intervention should have happened in the Balkans a long time before, and the UN totally dropped the ball in the genocides of the 1990's, so fuck them).

If you need citations for Waco, NAFTA (did it really happen or was it a dream?) Operation Desert Fox, and the bombing of the El Shifa Pharmaceutical plant in Sudan, you may want to buy Google for your computer. I will admit that I'm being inaccurate by saying that the US dropped bombs on Colombia, we were involved in defoliating large portions of the country (as Coca production managed to keep growing) and here is a list that says very little but does show which Colombian military units use American-provided helicopters to do whatever it is they do. Keeping in mind Colombia's atrocious human rights record, you can put the pieces to that puzzle together quite easily.

Same goes for the bit on Turkey, they were the third-leading recipient of American foreign aid in the mid- to late-nineties. At the same time, they were using American weapons to ethnically cleanse Kurds (read, "fight terror").

Serbia was a NATO military action, outside of the UN. There's an interesting discussion of the bombing in Chomsky's A New Generation Draws the Line (awaits backlash from citing Chomsky), and while you're reading it, you can find a wealth of resources on Indonesia and East Timor.

Did Clinton have a picture of working class America in the toilet? That's hard to say, and I'm willing to retract it.

Futhermore, I don't know how any of that posits me as a Right-winger. Unless being Left of a Clinton puts you on the Right...?
