I'm lost

"I am older than dirt and have more scars than Frankenstein."

That is one of Old Man McCain’s favorite quotes. He says it all the time and apparently does not realize it paints a very unflattering picture. If Johnny Naps wins he would be the oldest President ever inaugurated. This campaign has been brutal on the old man and it’s only getting worse.

Grandpa McCain went to Concord High School in New Hampshire on Tuesday and held a town hall meeting. I don’t think kids talked to their elders like this back in Old Time McCain’s day. The timeworn Republican is 71-years-old and that obviously frightens some teenagers. One young whippersnapper threw out this bomb:

If elected, you'd be older than Ronald Reagan, making you the oldest president. Do you ever worry that, like, you might die in office or get Alzheimer's or some other disease that might affect your judgment?

Gandalf looks a little baffled, rambles about music and video games, and then finally answers, with a joke chaser.

The fun wasn’t over for Merlin, as another young punk then hammered him about the subject of gay marriage.

Student: “Do you support civil unions or gay marriage?”

McCain: “I do not. I think that they impinge on the status and the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman.”

Student: “So you believe in taking away someone’s rights because you believe it’s wrong?”

McCain: “I wouldn’t put that interpretation on my position, but I understand yours.” […]

The student indicated that he wanted to follow up again.

McCain: “You have one more? Go ahead you’re doing good,” McCain encouraged.

Student: “I came here looking to see a leader. I don’t.”

Other students booed the punk and then a school administrator scolded him.

This is just getting hard to watch. McCain was a viable candidate in 2000, but the ugly tactics of Karl Rove crushed him and he dropped out. This year it is hard to watch. He has no money left, his campaigners are bailing left and right. And now high school kids are giving him shit. The old man’s time came and went. This is now embarrassing. It’s time to pack it in before he turns to dust.

Nice. A certain lack of foresight there. You don't piss on kids because they're the ones who are going to decide which nursing home you go to also they are the voters next time around.

I respect the man to death, but he does need to hang it up. Like pilots, politicians should be forced to retire at a certain age.

Mmm, I don't think he's playing to the right on that. I'm pretty sure he just doesn't like gay people getting it on.
But yeah, every other candidate is like, "Well, I want to make sure to uphold gay rights without violating the sanctity of marriage", whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean.

Sad to see him flailing around like this.

i think he handled the "old" question pretty well. and it was obvious he was smiling when he said "you little jerk" - it was comedic, not malicious.

*shrugs*

i don't have a problem with older politicians in office if they are active and generally healthy.

He was kidding for Yahweh's sake. Frankly, I enjoy his repartee with the audience. Him saying "little jerk" to a kid, obviously kidding around, does not mean I wouldn't vote for him. That being said, he probably won't make it past the primaries, so it matters little. And to head off the obligatory criticism, I haven't decided who I am voting for, as it's far to early.

Regarding the kid who asked the other question, well, he's a punk. No one has any respect anymore. Yay, he was admonished by the administration of the school. Who cares? Surely, if he has so little respect as to speak that way to a US Senator, then he couldn't give a shit less about a school principle's opinion. You might opine to me that a US Senator is no different than anyone, and should be called out on bullshit policies or failing to give a serious answer. I completely agree with that, and would never argue it. If anything, our politicians and decision makers should be more subject to criticism. But it takes more intellect to put together a coherent rebuttals and criticism than it does to merely insult someone, which is frankly all the kid did. And for the record, I don't think that the kid should speak that way to his peers either. But at least he got his name in the paper and some high fives after school, which is all he was likely after anyway.

I'm using that from now on.

Do you ever worry that, like, you might die in office or get Alzheimer's or some other disease that might affect your judgment?

It actually is the general consensus of those who followed the Reagan White House that he did indeed have Alzheimer's Disease while he was in office. I once watched Meet The Press (or one of those bullshit shows run by robots), and they were doing a piece on Reagan right after he died. And one of the people they interviewed (who worked in the Reagan cabinet) actually associated Ronnie's knack of falling asleep during meetings with "good leadership." Falling asleep constantly is a signature of Alzheimers, not quality leadership. If you had a boss who fell asleep at meetings that he called, you would immediately call his leadership skills into question, even request his fucking resignation. But not the leader of the fucking free world? This is the man who was entrusted with the nuclear launch codes and he had a fucking mentally debilatating disease that caused him to forget things. It's like lighting a cigarette during a gas leak. "Hey buddy, that cigarette could light this place on fire!" "Nah, this is actually safety procedure." BOOM.

Are you kidding? I want more of that from people. "Hey you! Bush! You fucking asshole! Why are we in Iraq, you son of a bitch?" Politicians constantly speak, act, and manner themselves like they are more important than the people they represent. Watch Hillary's recent appearance on Letterman for evidence. We need to call them down from their fucking plateaus. Insult the assholes, particularly if they act like they deserve it. "Fuck you Cheney! Eat shit!"

And the kid didn't even insult him, he just said that he wasn't a real leader. It's not like he insulted his mother or told him to fuck off. He just absolutely nailed that guy. I think that if McCain had responded wittily or with some level of confidence, and just told the kid to his face to, say, "just wait for the primaries," or even told him straight up to shut the fuck up, had he taken control of the situation himself, then maybe he could have in that instance proved the kid wrong and maybe earned a little respect. As it is, he pussied out and the school administrators had to do work that really he should have done himself. In other words, he didn't take the lead. Check and mate.

I think he handled the question pretty well, actually. And it seemed like the students got the sarcasm and also thought he did fine.

OTOH, the kid who asked the gay marriage question, rephrased McCain's reply in his own words and then gave a rude retort when McCain gave it back to him--WAS a jerk. So he disagrees, does that mean he has to act like an ignorant snot?

Having manners does not mean you are a wimp; and it does not automatically label you as either republican or democrat.

That being said, let me make it clear: I used to be a big fan of JM. But he has flipped his opinion one time too many at this point, so in my opinion he's nmot really a viable choice anymore.

ANd I don't know that I'd vote for Merlin as president, but HELL YA I'd vote for Gandalf!!!

McCain used to be awesome. I remember not so long ago when he was the voice of opposition against the Republican nonsense. He was the guy you could always count on to point out the bullshit, pick it up off the ground, and shove it right into the face of the person who left it lying there. The second he decided to run he dropped all his principles in the dirt and started kissing up to the same guys who he was yelling himself red in the face about just months beforehand. It's pretty sickening to see a guy I respected so much fall so far.

If you think that speaking your mind to a political adversary in (apparently) even and appropriate tone is "disrespect", I shudder to think of what the founding fathers would think of you.

If this were my kid and he were disciplined for it, I would fight it to the very end. Whether I agreed with his political viewpoint or not. This is the kind of speech that the First Amendment was specifically designed for and it's the kind of dissent that America was founded on. If you've got a problem with that, then frankly you can get the fuck out of my country.
