I'm lost

AUG 07, 2007 12:20 AM

Last week Rupert Murdoch purchased the publisher of the Wall Street Journal for $5 billion. Many reporters at the paper are upset and worried that Murdoch will have a negative effect on the paper. He certainly does not have a very good track record when it comes to running newspapers. The New York Post loses between $30 million and $50 million a year while cranking out a daily load of crap. The Times of London lost $89 million in 2004. But the huge loses mean little to Rupert because he uses the papers as propaganda machines for his right wing agenda.

I know very little about the business world, but it is safe to say the Wall Street Journal is the news source for whatever is happening on Wall Street – hence the name. It wasn’t hard for me to figure out. The Journal’s business reporters are highly regarded but the papers editorial board may be dumber and more biased than the idiots at the Fox News Channel.

So, fuck ‘em. Murdoch’s takeover will destroy the credibility of the paper and the editorials will become as meaningless as the ramblings of Bill O’Reilly. For someone like me, who fights evil, it is a win-win. Yet, some people are quite upset.

Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd is concerned.

The foundation of our democracy rests in our ability to hear from a diverse array of sources so that we can make informed decisions. The Wall Street Journal has provided a valuable and important news choice to the American public for years. With News Corp's purchase of the newspaper, I am concerned that it will be very difficult for the Journal to offer fair and balanced reporting under the pressures of a giant-media conglomerate.

Fair and balanced, get it? He is quite the naughty minx. John Edwards also took a shot at the takeover.

The basis of a strong democracy begins and ends with a strong, unbiased and fair media — all qualities which are pretty hard to subscribe to Fox News and News Corp. The reality is that Americans deserve more news outlets — not fewer.

Sounds good to me. Edwards was not done there, however. He took the moment to go after Hillary Clinton because she has only one master: Corporate dollars.

Moreover, given Fox News' consistent efforts to demean Democrats…no Democrat running for president should accept campaign money from top News Corp executives. So, today, I'm challenging every Democratic presidential candidate to refuse contributions from News Corp executives and return any they've already taken, beginning with Rupert Murdoch.

That would be why Hillary has not said a word about the Wall Street Journal takeover. Murdoch has already purchased her with personal donations, News Corp executive donations and by hosting a fundraiser for her campaign.

News Corp executives have donated $20,900 to Clinton so far in this election cycle. Murdoch’s family has donated $9,000. In July 2006, Murdoch held a fundraiser for Hillary at the News Corp building in New York. Clinton managed to pull in $60,000 from the event. Now Hillary keeps her mouth shut while other Democratic candidates voice their concern. But that is to be expected from the biggest corporate hustler in the race. If Hillary wins the election, expect her to give away the country to corporations, just as Bill did.

Bill was for "putting people first." Then he entered the White House and pushed for NAFTA, signed welfare reform, consolidated the airwaves through the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (leading to Clear Channel's takeover) and cleared the mergers of mega-banks.

Hey, how did that stuff work out?

It says a lot about Hillary that she would cozy up to the man whose News Channel and newspapers led the charge against her husband during his impeachment. She has zero integrity.

Murdoch has been cozying up to both Clintons for several years now, actually. Neither Bill nor Hillary are exceptionally inclined to bear grudges against men with money.

Well, thanks for using the space to illuminate us, rather than making some dipshit comment.

But, then, at least you are consistant.

Everything he owns looses money upon what? Oh, you meant "loses" money.

I only jerkishly call attention to that common misspelling because in this case it changes the meaning of your sentence entirely.

You do realize that the first female presidential candidate was back in the 1880s? And that there were women running to be the nominee for BOTH MAJOR PARTIES in 2000? And that there was a woman running for the Democratic nomination as recently as 2004?

And that there have been female presidential candidates on the actual election ballots for decades (albeit for minor parties like Right to Life and Socialist Workers Party)?

Hillary has done nothing Shirley Chisom didn't do back in 1972 (outside of poll considerably higher). Oh yeah, there is an old story that Shirley received contributions from Nixon's CREEP. Which kind of ties into the O.P. a fair bit, no?

Are you kidding me? Four years of President Hillary is Fox News' wet dream. Rush Limbaugh's too, for that matter. A four year ratings bonanza.

Imagine all the ads for backwards-running clocks and the like.

Murdoch pulled the same trick on Tony Blair. Despite Murdoch's undoubted rightwing agenda he did a deal, and supported Blair, when it looked like the Conservatives would lose an election - in return for no controls over his cross-media ownership in the UK. But at least Australian-born Murdoch is an American patriot? Just read the shit he gets his British papers to print about the US. The man would pimp his own grandmother.

So get ready for a marriage made in heaven - Hilary Clinton supported by Fox News. (And although individual newspapers do post losses, his global corporation remains very profitable, although a lot of the money is in off-shore funds, where Murdoch doesn't have to pay taxes to the UK government.)

In the grand scheme of things, he could give a fuck about the apple-pie image of America that is in the heads of most Fox News viewers. The man is simply about obtaining power.

Murdoch is a neocon/Tory. He gets his newsmedia to report with that bias. In the UK, it's not as big a deal, because everyone knows that the UK newspapers are biased. They don't even try to hide it. Here, we have a tradition of respecting objectivity. Murdoch poorly hides his pro-Republican bias and tries to pass it off as "fair and balanced". I see him doing this with the Journal (which, while a conservative rag, was only conservative on the editorial pages).

As for Hillary, I think that Murdoch is trying to play her. He, as well as the rest of the Republican party, seem to think that she's the easiest candidate to beat. They figure that a ticket that Clinton leads will drive conservative voters to the polls to vote for "anyone but Hillary", no matter who that person is. They could be batshit crazy Ron Paul, for all anyone cares. Hillary only sees the horse race with Obama, and so doesn't care where the money comes from.

If I had extra money lying around, I'd open a chequing account under the name "North American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA)", write $200 cheques to each presidential candidate, and then see who actually cashed the cheques. Why? The other Democratic candidates might talk outrage, but I'm willing to bet that they wouldn't say no to any donation, no matter who it came from.

This doesn't mean that I think that Hillary should have accepted the money or fundraising help, but I've already lost hope that she would turn into a candidate I could vote for. She's as sleazy as Bill, but without the slickness to at least make you feel good about voting for him. They're all sleazy. Obama is a bit too close to Tony Rezko for my liking. Edwards, if he is being truthful in his stump speeches, wants to be a "Robin Hood" president. As mush as I would like to help the poor, it's not the government's job to give handouts. It's the government's job to provide the means for each and every person who wants to to become self sufficient.

It looks like I shall be following my grand tradition, started in 2004, of voting for the most batshit insane person from the Dems or GOP. So far it looks like Kucinich or Ron Paul, with Ron Paul being most likely, as he's more my kind of crazy.
