(if it's been noted, please delete!)

A 13 year old girl in Kentucky lost her feet in a bizarre accident on a free-fall ride at Six Flags. The drop ride, traveling down at speeds of 54 miles per hour malfunctioned, causing a cord to snap off with such force that it whipped under the platform and cut the teen's feet clear off.

The brilliant CNN article reports

Her feet were recovered by Six Flags staff and were sent to the hospital with her.

Makes it sound like they put them in a lunch box & sent her on her way.

Just to clarify a point.

Top speed on the ride is 54 mph, not 154 mph.

But yeah, stuff like this makes you think twice about amusement parks. And I'm a coaster entusuiast.

I used to work in sub-contract electronic engineering, and we happily ignored a whole bunch of safety-critical instructions.

So those fair ground rides, with low-paid part time staff, who are a bit bored and a bit inattentive? I hate those.

"We're going to keep these things down until we're certain it's safe," Cedar Fair spokesman Craig Ross told the AP. "We'll wait and see."

. . . 'but no-one cares about the number of people killed and mutilated in RTAs on their way here'?
