Celebrity sex scandal tapes are about as common as exercise videos in the good ol’ USA. Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton’s video sexploits are widely embraced and help boost the star’s profiles and careers. But in Iran such mass voyeurism isn’t so widely appreciated and now famed actress Zahra Amir Ebrahimi’s recent sex tape scandal may end up sending her to the gallows.

Iran's parliament on Wednesday voted in favor of a bill that could lead to death penalty for persons convicted of working in the production of pornographic movies.

With a 148-5 vote in favor and four abstentions, lawmakers present at the Wednesday session of the 290-seat parliament approved that "producers of pornographic works and main elements in their production are considered corruptors of the world and could be sentenced to punishment as corruptors of the world."

“Corrupters of the World” is a phrase from the Qur'an that indicates one of Islam’s greatest crimes, often punishable by death. An underground DVD that took the Iran by storm last year allegedly shows Ebrahimi having sex with a man. Ebrahimi claimed the tape was a fake but is now being investigated by the government. The unnamed man in the video is currently in jail.

The legislation passed the Iranian Parliament but has yet to be fully approved by the Guardian Council. Ebrahimi could be facing a public whipping or even death. Isn’t it time for the US to act now and offer political asylum for the politically repressed members of the Persian porn industry?

I dont see the point of killing someone over having sex.
So what if it was taped.
It's 2007.

That's Iran for ya. I love separation of church and state.

Hey, maybe if they keep it up, they'll kill everyone in the country who's suspected of having sex, leaving only a bunch of Qur'an-thumping psychopathic mullahs capering around the desert, screaming "God is great" until they're hoarse. You know, best-case scenario.

Wouldn't surprise me. If it's just a private sex tape that got out, though...

Still wouldn't surprise me.

Sounds like one, doesn't it?

Has she made any money from it? If not, then how can she be considered to have participated in a 'pornographic production'?

The mind boggles.

if she had sex outside of marriage than they'll kill her anyway. And it might not even be
the government that kills her.

It would very cool if there was some tacit, unspoken element in which unofficially the porn and the sex were encouraged, and the resolution of the government was just posturing to make the government look like they were doing something but they were in fact all Bokononists. But we don't live in Kurt Vonnegut's world anymore, sometimes i think maybe we never did, so this is just downright unconscionable.

You almost have to wonder, if they christian coalition or Project for the New American Century(fuckers) ever got enough power, I almost have to believe they'd pass something similar.

i still think it's hilarious (and fortunate) that after all this time and events like this that the christian right still can't get over the whole "calling their god 'allah' instead of 'jesus'" thing and realize that islamic fundamentalists could easily be their best friends in the whole wide world.

According to here the tape got out last year, so it's a wonder they haven't dragged her out into the streets and stoned her yet. Do you think it's because she's reasonably high-profile that they have to go through the motions of law for her?

I can't say I know much about Iran, but the whole thing is very silly.

What I don't get is why people who would like to do things like this don't move to countries that aren't ruled by Islamic fundamentalists.

If I really wanted to smoke pot in the streets and have decent health care I wouldn't stay in America.

Yeah- but we'd have to get written clarification that they won't let Paris out.

On the article, it doesn't sound like this woman's actually a porn star though...
Wonder if the bloke who's involved is awaiting the death sentence too.
My guess is no.

This is an example of the insanity of theocratic governments; with the false belief that they represent a higher authority, they go on campaigns to outlaw all that which comes natural, and to eliminate the free discussion thereof. A private tape which was either stolen or seized, to be considered a ground for punishment is insanity. I also find the idea of the iranian theocracy to labal any party "corrupters of the world", to be somewhat odd, considering it is coming from a group of individuals who behead non-believers, and stone adulterers...

There is the whole question of actually.....um.....getting out.

Especially if you do not possess the "almighty penis"

Sounds along the same lines of "well then why didn't the slaves just go back to Africa??"

While it may be difficult to leave the country I would think it a bit off to compare this to slaves going back to Africa. There is other land around Iran... the lovely Turkmenistan for instance... it's not as easy to swim across the Atlantic!
